OK let's try this AGAIN.

At CFR I was checking out the different modes on the new display and asked the Yamaha Canada rep, John Bayless about using the diagnostic mode like what is available on the Gen 1 and Gen II's. John didn't know the answer but talked to the service reps back at the office and sent me this reply....

Hi Bill,You are welcome and thanks for your kind words.

I have spoken to Rick Lewis about the meter diagnostics ... the 2013 FJR features our new Yamaha diagnostic tool coupler (under one of the side covers). When they use this new and improved system, you can no longer access the diagnostic mode in the meter. If there is a problem a fault code will appear in the meter, but a customer can not dig any further. Part of this new Yamaha diagnostic system is what is known as FFD ... freeze frame data ... which means if there is an intermittent problem, the ECU will store the info about what happened so a tech can go in, hook up the special tool and down the stored info to see what went wrong ... this is a cool deal especially if it is an intermittent problem that comes and goes.

When you see Rick at the races he will explain. I hope your foot / ankle is doing better.

Sometimes progress can cause issues for the shady tree mechanics among us. I spent a little time trying to find the tooling required but so far have come up empty. Maybe Richard has the shop manual and there is a part number available for the scanner. My guess is that there is an interface unit that plugs into the coupler under the side cover and then software to perform the diagnostic functions but that is only a guess on my part.

I thought this was fairly interesting and just wanted to pass it along.

Good information Bill. Too bad the display / diagnostics appear to be locked down now. Will definitely make it harder for the shade-tree mechanics among us to troubleshoot, repair and perform 100% of our maintenance items. Good thing that YES is still available through D&H at reasonable prices...
