Why does the temperature readings go up and down so fast and what is normal temperature.My new fjr readings can go up 100c which I think is to hot anyone more familiar with temperature readings on 2015 fjr.

 
I don't really monitor mine, but I've seen temps between 215F and 230F.

Why does it go up and down quickly? I don't know, and I don't know what "quickly" means to you. I can guess that your engine heats up to the point where the thermostat opens, then cool water gushes in to lower the coolant temperature.

Depending on where the temp sensor is located in the cooling circuit, it may be measuring the "cool side" of the loop: between the radiator outlet and the entrance to the engine. The coolant temperature at that point will vary widely on cold days (like Ireland in February) at higher speeds (like FJRs) as those will combine to chill the coolant very quickly.

Mine does the same, I read about it and it's normal. It seems to run quite cool, today was 65 to 75C (but it is chilly out!).

During the service I just did I flushed the coolant out and filled with Castrol Radicool and distilled water (50/50). I let it idle until the fans cut in which happened at 105C. The fans are very quiet.

The gauging system probably needs an electrical damper in it to smooth out the readings. I think most cars have a system to stop the fuel gauge swinging when you are going uphill or downhill.

Best to ride with another information page selected, I like the current fuel consumption display.

 
I usually ride with "range" and the trip odometer displayed. How far have I come? When do I need more fuel?

My second page has ambient temp and coolant temp, and the third page has .... ummm, something I very rarely refer to, apparently.

Yeah, ride more stress less.

The Gen3 has no electronic buffer like a needle gauge in an auto does or like the bar gauge of previous gen's. So you will see big temperature variations in short time periods. It's normal.

 
This question comes up repeatedly with new owners of these later Gens. It's normal behavior; a consequence of the location of the temperature sensor for the display. It is more pronounced in cooler weather.

It's the dark side of having a digital display: Gives you something to worry about that isn't a true problem. My fix is I just don't display it :)

This is higher than I see in normal riding. In these cases it tops out around 165 deg F, which is well below 100 C. In traffic it'll warm up more. Does your fan kick on?

The benefits of a system that uses water in combination with ethylene glycol that has a boiling point of 197 C. It's also a pressurized system that becomes more efficient the higher the pressure. 100 C and higher is in the "normal" range.

Ride more, stress less.

 
As Iggy sez, using a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and a good 15 psi radiator cap, the thermostat should open someplace around 85°C to 90°C. When stopped and idling the temperature can rise to around 101°C to 105°C and the fans should kick on. Once the fans come on the temperature should stabilize and drop. The fans should not come on while the motor cycle is moving above a very low speed. The pressurized cap will add roughly 25°C more before the coolant boils.

All Gens use a similar temperature sensor. The analog voltage (DC that varies with the coolant temperature) goes to the ECU where it gets converted from analog to digital (the language the ECU speaks), the ECU then sends a digital value to the display which moves the bars to match the digital value (simplified version may not be exactly complete). The ECU can take a number of readings and then average them together, called digital filtering, then every few time units the ECU sends this digitally averaged value to the display. By taking a lot of averages and updating the display every few seconds will cause a very stable display, just like the gas level. On the Gens that display a number value the ECU is working the same way as before only the display shows numbers instead of blocks. The numbers flicker and change because the ECU isn't performing much averaging or it is updating the display too frequently. The display should update often enough that you can see a sudden change in coolant temperature, but not so often as to have rapidly changing values.

If the fans aren't on, the coolant temperature is fine. If you are stopped and the fans come on and the radiator doesn't boil over the temperature is fine. If you are moving at normal traffic speeds and the fans come on and the coolant temperature doesn't stabilize or doesn't go down you may have a problem. The cooling action will vary with speed and ambient temps, as long as the thermostat opens and the radiator does not boil life is good and ride on

Left my 2015 fjr ticking over and temperature read 105c before fans cut in is this normal.

On a run the tem goes up and down it can read 85c and then back to 65c instantly

Your coolant shouldn't be all water (which boils at 100C at standard pressure) and should be under slight positive pressure, which means it won't boil until 120C or maybe even higher.

If your ATGATT melts while riding or your exhaust pipe glows red (see other thread), that's probably too hot.

Let me repeat: Ride more, worry less.

Thanks for this thread, I have wondered if it was normal for my 2014 to cycle between 145F and 178F and back within about 25 seconds. I have not been concerned because it is on the low side. Since I only purchased it at the end of Aug I was concerned for the summer when we get into triple digests for a couple of weeks.
