I remember seeing a thread for this but a search came up with nothing. I asked the dealer if the bag locks had been loctited and they looked at me like I was crazy. They said there was nothing to loctite and that the locks could not possibly back out. Are the locks on the '06 different? My guess is that they are not. Can someone put up a clicky to the past thread or just tell me where to add the goop?

I remember the thread - in fact when I picked up my bags (received separately by the local dealers in Canada - and we don't get liners) I mentioned using Loctite to him and the reply was 'good idea'.

If your dealer won't, just take the bike home, put the third lock away, get out the Loctite Blue and do it yourself.

Crizyal,

If you look at the manual that came with the bags on the '06 I'm almost positive it states specifically that Loctite (or some form thereof) has to be used on the locks when they are assembled.....You might want to take that back to the dealer and show him or do it yourself.

The dealer assembly instructions SPECIFICALLY state to use locktite on the backs.

The lock itself does not need locktite, but there's a catch that screws to the back of the lock barrel using two security torx screws. These are what you want to locktite, and use the perminant stuff. I had a bag fly open pulling into my driveway about 3 weeks after I got my bike, so it's DEFINATLY possible for them to come undone.

If the dealer isn't reading instructions, then arguing on the wrong side of a technical question, you should walk uot and never ever ever return there again. Find a new dealer.

If you use Loctite, use their Quickstix product which comes in all grades. Unlike the liquid, it's a waxy-like product that stays where it's put and doesn't drip or run. We all know that Loctite liquid damages plastic.

There's a knucklehead's description about how to install the locks with Loctite (2nd post from bottom) on this thread:

Installing sidebag hardware

Yes, Loctite is mandatory. If you are not sure the dealer did it right, you'll need to get a T-10 Torx security bit, open your latch and check the tightness of the two little screws under there.

IMHO, screw checking for tightness. If there's any doubt, and you're there with the tools, pull it and locktite it yourself. Then there's no question it's done right.

Well, just for grins, I checked to see if my bag locks were tight -

And it seems that the monkey installing the locks used a PHILLIIPS HEAD screwdriver to tighten the screws - now I have these lovely little round holes in what should be a T10 socket.

So - being unable to check for loctite on the threads - I used some Loctite Green - any one else used this stuff?

If I ever have to remove the locks, wish me luck.

It'll be hard to do, but you can get in there with a dremel and a cut-off wheel and slot the top of the screw. Then use a flatblade "yankee" type screwdriver to remove.

Thanks, Slappy,

I'm thinking I should visit the service tech that did this and dremel his .......

I'm sure he could use a slot.

WoW, what a time (& $ saveing) if we just read the "New Owners Read This" in the New Owners section of this board.

Later, De

Just pulled the latches off the bags and NO loctite. I added some. Funny how a little thing like that could spoil an otherwise great trip (South Dakota Black Hills next week).

I installed the bags on my '06 a few days ago. The magnetic security torx set I got at Sears helped with those little screws on the locks. The instructions were clear to use the loctite. I used blue loctite but was wondering if I should have used purple loctite (It is made for small screws like set screws). And I didn't buy a loctite stick because I had the blue liquid laying around. On one screw a little extra came out and I just dabbed it on a towel. Seems to have worked fine. Just my experience.....

I saved my bags. Just out of curiosity, since I found some loctite and torx security stuff, I figured I'd check out the screws. One screw was 3/4 out and very loose and one was very loose, but still in. Also one was replaced with a very small bolt (guess the previous owner lost one). So as a friendly reminder, check-em!!!

Well, I read this post too late. I am missing one screw for my sidebag latch, and the other one just fell out.

Of course, I do not have a T10 security bit (will get one after work).

What I am having a hard time locating is the part number of the little screw needed.

Does anyone know this part number, or where I can get it?

The microfiche at ronayers.com doesn't seem to be working this morning.

Thank you,

Chris

When I got my new 08 , I checked the screws ,,thanks to FJR forum information ..

The screws were just finger tight at best, and didn't have any loctite on them..

Used a little blue loctite..

I think I go check them again today,,, just for piece of mind...

I knew to check mine on my 08 after I picked it up because I had been through all that with my old 04. When I picked it up from the dealer they handed me all the paperwork that came with the bike. When I got home I went through it there was a sheet of paper in it for the dealer setup tech that's specifically tells them when assembling the bags to the bike to use Loctite on the torx screws. They must of missed that. Ha!

You don't really need to use security screws. You can go to your local hardware store and buy non-security torx screws or whatever socket head they have that fits and loc-tite them in there.
