I started my 04 with (38,000 miles) in the garage to warm it up before changing oil and filter. Probably the first time I have had the engine running without earplugs and helmet. Heard the little guy in there beating on the aluminum with a fork. I assume I have a #$%&^& ticker! The noise seems to lessen after the engine has been running for a while. I searched the site for an audio on the ticker and it seems to be the same sound. The bike used a little less than a quart on a recent 6,000 mile trip. I've never had a Japanese motorcycle use any oil between changes before. Is this part of the syndrome? Too bad, I really like the bike.

I"ll contact the dealer tomorrow and see what they say. I may be back for advice. Ian, Iowa

I've usually seen them where they're quieter at startup and noisier after use, but not always. Oil use is a bummer and indicator. Metallic sounding ticking as opposed to general tick, tick, tick is an indicator. More pronounced on left side than right side? Usually, it's cylinders #1 and #2 that are more prone.

I would suggest talking to your dealer about dropping the header to look for oil in the exhaust.

If so, the magic words are "premature valve guide wear" and "oil consumption". Make that your mantra when they talk with Cypress. Have them say the phrases along with you to get them used to it.
