Saddle Bag

Anybody have a locked saddlebag come off ? This is my 12th bike. I have over 200k miles riding exp. Over 9k on this bike but the other day, my left saddlebag blew off ? It was locked. Possible warranty? Thank you

Yes but it wasn't locked!

Check by yanking on the handle before riding off. The red zones can be misleading!

Did you recover the bag ???

Was the key cylinder still in place ? If it wasn't the cylinder screws did not have locktite applied, the screws backed off, the cylinder fell out and the bag took of flying, or.... :blink:

If it blew off, you didn't have the bottom secured into the slot/tang. I know of other FJR owners that have traveled some significant distances with unlocked bags, (unintensionally), w/o incident. The latch might have been locked on top, but if you put the bag on correctly, it wouldn't blow off w/o one heck of a bump to get it up and over the latch hooks and the bottom tang.

The number of miles you've ridden doesn't really have anything to do with this. Anyone can accidently put the bag on wrong. Over 9k on the bike huh?

after the fact now but........on the forum is a great fix that involves drilling a hold through the slot/tang and using a bolt to keep all in place. Have not done it yet but with winter being here and another report of blown bags - I think I will be doing the fix.

Is that trailer hardware? Remind me what it is called again. I am sure Home Deopt does not have it, but possibly a marine hardware might have it in stainless?

I got 'em at NAPA, zinc plated. They're called hitch spring clip pins, or something like that. The ones I used are 1/4" and I drilled 1/4" holes so they are good and snug. Takes a little more effort lining 'em up, but they don't rattle around, as the rubber holds 'em nice & snug.

If memory serves, we have those in the hardware dept at Lowe's. Should be in the area where we have the blue drawers with all the misc. nuts,bolts etc.

all farm/ranch supply stores and most rv/trailer/truck supply stores will have--hitch pin is a common name they will have an assortment with various sizes and locking/retaining tabs

Good luck. Other than trailers, which use zinc, I've never seen these particular pins used in marine appliations, and I've had no luck finding these in stainless...

I know it as a "wire lock pin." I got mine in the specialty fasteners drawers at Lowe's.

The originator of this mod called it the "No Bag Left Behind" fix.

Most farm & home type stores have them. Often used on tractor farm implements.

Another interesting possibility is McMaster-Carr P/N: 90293A120

There are several variations in plain, zinc and stainless. With and without lanyard.
