Cheap HIDs? Is it possible??

Saw these on another board, what are your opinions on them -

I mean for $260 bucks you are getting 2 Bi-xenon lights right??? Direct replacement for current bulbs in the feejer and should light up the road right?? I know they dont have 4300k which is supposed to be the best for visual quality, but at 5000k its pretty close...

What do you think??

These are getting rave reviews on the BMW boards. And those boys know HID.

You could make them work. Edit: never mind. Looks like the ballast and that other thing are not actually attached to each other. Just a lousy pic. Or my lousy eyes....

I think for the same money you could find an even better setup on eBay. Keep in mind that a single stationary light source is not as good as a moveable single light source, and both may suck on high beam in the FJR reflector. There's not too much experience around here with the "D2R" type units that move the light source around in the reflector. Sure would be nice for someone to get a set and see if they get even acceptable results.

Some of the newer setups don't have as many separate parts.

And like Skyway said below, if you think it's going to be 20 minutes install on an FJR, you could be mistaken. Maybe 2 hours. Maybe.

Well, that is twenty minutes after you remove all the necessary plastic parts, and figure out where these things will fit, and build all the required brackets, and run all the wires, and......

I think the Group/Self buy we did a year ago had us buying the lights for about this much. The price is OK, but doesn't seem like a killer deal to me.

The picture you posted above is not a bixenon kit. It is a low beam only kit, and may not work well as that. There is no shield on the lights, which would produce a lot of scatter and glare. Guarantee this will attract the attention of cops, and will probably not win you any points with anyone driving in the opposite direction.

Now if you look at this picture the website has, it does have the little light shield that you need, but does not show a shutter for the high beam. It may be possible this is the type that moves the HID capsule to the high beam position, but I've never seem those in person, so I don't know.

Right, that's where I got the pic I posted. It doesn't look like any of the bixenon H4 lights I've seen that have a shutter. I've only seen one bixenon light that moves the bulb, and this does not look like that one. I'm not sure how this one switches between high beam and low beam. Its really hard to tell from this pic.

I've emailed a couple eBay vendors to inquire. If it's a shutter style light, they should go for under 2 bills these days. There are a couple "moveable light source" kits on there for about the same price listed above.

Also, one guy has a Dual light source, dual bulb kit for about $300 shipped. That is what Warchild is working on. The light source position is everything. Then the next consideration is the ballasts. The 3 bill kit looks to have 4 of them (to power 2 x hi and low sources). I might buy a set of those and try to shoe horn them in my AE. First, I'll ask Warchild if he's already tried that particular configuration. Looks like he's beta testing the same thing, except with two big ballasts instead of four smaller ones. Personally, I'd rather deal with four small ones. But the real killer is the length of the wires.

Just thinking outloud. And waiting to hear. So far, one guy responded. I don't think he speaks English very well, so I didn't get the information I was looking for. Still waiting for more info.

That is a kit with a pair of moveable light source HIDs. Under 2 bills. The question is does the light source start and end in the correct position. The vendor would not give any dimensions and would not say if the light source was adjustable. Pretty prompt response, but not enough info. This would more than likely be a much better arrangement than a shutter type HID kit.

That eBay number points to a 4 light source kit. 4 ballasts. About a 3 meter harness, but no info on the ballast to capsule leads. No dimensions. Big language and low profit barrier ensues. But for under $300 looks like a pretty sweet deal. No idea if the light sources are in the optimal position. Be cool to have dual beams in the reflector, though!

The ones pictured are the "Low-Beam Only" version, but unless they are properly shielded for the H4 application (the ones pictured here are not), you will throw light out everywhere, and really piss off on-coming cagers. And Mr LEO will eventually pull you over for a discussion, too.

The ones pictured further on down in this thread are the ******** "moveable shield" hi/lo's, a slightly different variant of the suck-ass "butterfly-wings" HID Hi/Lo kits we saw during the Group Buy in late 2005. They are crap. Save your money.

LOL - I got that the high beams would suck with the "butterflies" but wouldnt the low beam work fairly well? At least better than the stock bulbs and still have a decent cutoff? I'm just looking for something to upgrade a tad, not go crazy and fry bambi as mentioned in other threads.

Yes, the low beams are awesome. A couple of the old bixenon sets were gathing dust around the board, and a couple sets sold for under $150. The kind with the moveable source might be a lot better than the shutter kind. And still for less on eBay than your first post price.

We KNOW the shutter bixenons suck on high beam. BUT, we also know that the low beam is VERY good on the model we bought in the group buy. So there is a known there. All the rest may be great, or may suck. And might suck on high beam AND low beam. So you pays your money, and you takes your chances.

I want to fry Bambi, so I'm trying to get some input from TPTB, and from those more knowledgeable. If we can all hold our horses for a while, we may end up with some very effective lights. But I just love to tinker....

This is the BiXenon kit I have used in the past:



This is NOT the shutter type. This kit has the movable base that repositions the entire HID capsule fore/aft as required to be either the low beam or the high.

In three different bikes with wildly different reflectors, the beam patterns of both high and low beam were spot on with this kit.

I intend to try this (which is very similar to the kit offered by the company in post 1) in my FJR soon. I'll report back.

You know, when the HID self buy was going on last year, I asked a few times about the in/out solenoid type units, and got jumped on like a two bit whore in a jailhouse. These seem to be the most practical of all the designs. I cannot see that the solenoid would be unreliable. Solenoids are fairly arcane devices and would take something dramatic for one to fail, let alone both simultaneously.

Let us know what happens with that, whoever first installs them! Looking forward to HID's some day!
