Oil light frequently coming on

I posted about 6 months ago that my oil light came on while on the interstate. I turned the key off, turned it back on (at speed) and all was fine, it never came back on.

This week, it has come on at least a dozen times. On at least 4 occasions, turning the key off, even for 15 seconds at a time, has not caused it to extinguish. When parked on the center stand, the oil level is 3/4 of the way up between the two markers, so it's not an oil level issue.

So, since it's not an oil level issue, it must be an oil pressure issue. Why is this thing coming on? What am I needing to replace to make it stop?

You could do an oil pressure (or have your Dealer perform it) check.

Section 3-16 of the Service Manual details this procedure.

It's NOT an oil pressure issue. There is nothing on the FJR that measures oil pressure.

My guess is that there is something wrong with your oil level measuring system - the float, the sensor, the sending unit. Something.

In section 5-3 (of the SM) the exploded view shows an "oil level switch coupler"

It appears to cross over the top of the head cover. It might be a corrosion problem at this point.

+1. Just checked and there is no pressure sensor on a 2nd gen FJR. Only a level sensor. So as long as you know you have enough oil you can safely ignore it. Or if AR, figure out what the sensor problem is.

A strategically placed piece of tape ? Seriously...sensor wouldnt be worth the hassle man ! Good luck anyhow !

My 07 is doing the same thing. But as the guys say, I check the level all the time and ignore the light. If you find anything make sure to post up, I'll be interested.

+1 My R1 is very sensitive to being the least bit low on oil. Top it off and see what happens.

Scott, it happens to me when the engine isn't fully warmed up and I take a curve. Invariably the level is fine. I pull over, shut the bike off/on and it goes away. Dealer told me it was nothing and guys here on the forum said the same thing. Topping off the oil does help.

It's probably all the metal shavings, empty beer cans, a couple of missing wrenches, and maybe a rag or two, from when you had your transmission rebuilt by that shade tree mechanic, plugging up the oil level sensor. :fie: :fie:

I've always filled mine to near the top of the hole, above full line but still a small air gap in sight window . . . . If your switch is over sensitive this may help . . .

I was thinking something along those lines, maybe the thing is not quite right from the work that was done before, getting jammed once in a while. Somehow the quoted post was more eloquent than i could have been. B)

But if that's the suspicion, maybe pull that sensor next time you do an oil change.
