Take that ye scurvy rats! Oh, forgot, "Arrrrgggghh"!!

The captain of the M/S Nautica ordered passengers inside and gunned the engine, allowing the ship to outrun the pirates' speedboats in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday, a company spokesman said.

Man that cruise ship must have more power than a FJR! It is about time that these ships got a little armament and cleared out that pirate problem once and for all. A little bit of their own medicine could go a long way! With 1000 guests and a large crew I am sure there would be enough volunteers to put up a large counter force. I say enough already!

I saw on another news site that they were doing 27 mph (23 kts) to outrun the bad guys. Pretty quick for such a big mass.

Time for Q-Ships to make a come back and go to the Horn of Africa area.

I don't know if that porker of a boat actually out ran the pirates or if the tsunami size wake simply blew them away.

I say send out a trojan horse. One innocent looking cargo ship or tanker loaded to the gills with people who know how to use the weapons provided. A Cobra gunship in the hold would be righteous!

"Battle stations!! Prepare to ram!"

Ramming is good... if you are in a big tub like that.

Of course they could just ugly them to death.

Piracy has been a modern scourge for years and years now. The Somalia situation simply highlights. I agree wholly, though: a single Phalanx gun on bow and stern would be a fair investment for cruise ships frequenting the area. It's only going to get worse until these scum get seriously smacked down.

I agree with the 'time to get tough' responses. The pirates are no dummies but measures can be taken (and I mean with an iron fist).

The Q-ships idea is great. I'm surprised that nobody mentioned why "the halls of Tripoli" is in the Marine hymn! Time to combine the two.

I have been working with cruise ships for 8 years (Disney Cruise Line)

Big cruise ships use to have up to 130.000 horses.

Yes right, just little bit more then FJR

Well, as the Feej has 145.000 horsies, they brought a slug to the drag race. But then, just how fast would you want, say, The Hilton, to be moving beneath you?

I hate to correct you, but I am fairly certain that it is 145.013 horses. I like the protection scheme, if it was me I would pay the pirates to look threatening and collect my money.

The Headline I'd like to see next would read: "Cruise Ship Out(Guns) Pirate Scum" (not outruns)

Outrunning them only gives the pirates another chance with someone not as fortunate.

Y'know, seems like the navy could have some fun with some armed unmanned drones over this area, too. Ship calls for assistance as it is attacked, and suddenly, mysteriously out of the sky appears a missile that takes out the scurvy bastards. No Blackhawk Down about it. Simple justice meted out from above.

If you think a cruise ship is fast at 27mph, consider the Navy's nuclear carriers. Top-end speed is classified, but has been reported at near or above 40mph. Imagine a ship the size and weight of a small city moving at 40mph through the ocean! Wow! Plus, they actually have Phalanx guns!

I'd like to hear about some naval victories against pirates other than the Indian navy sinking what might've been the wrong ship!
