FJRF003.1: Ignition Switch

I saw the TB today at the dealership. It looks to be about 10 pages long. They were willing to let me bring in just the upper brace so they could replace the switch, leaving me to reinstall the brace on the bike. Then the Service Manager noticed that they are required to punch the VIN plate. So, he has to have the whole bike. Around here, that means waiting a month or so. They also said they'd do iy while I waited - should be about 1 1/2 hours.

My dealer is going to replace my ignition switch for the 2nd time due to the recall. My bike is there for another problem and the District Rep. contacted me and the dealer to say that Yamaha is going to replace the switch. The dealer said it may take a week or two to get the new switch Japan/California. Looks like Yamaha is going to take care of my bike again.

This is very interesting. I purchased my new to me 07A last Sept from a foum member. I have not received any notice at all about this recall. Shouldn't I have got some notice from somebody. WTF?

Just spoke to my dealer and he did not mention anything about not riding the bike - I'm perplexed :blink:

Reading the whole thread helps. Go check out post #28 again. Remember that it says "should" and "approximately". If you're second owner I wouldn't count on a notification.

Did you refer him to the Technical Bulletin that's also discussed in post #230?

As a second owner you most likely won't get a recall notice unless you have had work done by a dealer where the dealer will associate your name/address with the VIN of your FJR. Even then it may be iffy. I bought my FJR new and have never received a recall notice (like the TPS & trunk) <_< However, if I were to take my bike to a dealer, they would enter my VIN and up would pop a record of the open and completed recall items for my FJR.

If your dealer were to run your VIN, the computer should show the open recall notice. If the dealer were familiar with the recall he would then advise you to walk home because your bike is unsafe. If your dealer wasn't familiar with the recall they should read the recall to see what it says. Recalls often involve safety and the dealer should be concerned...

Candy is the parts/service manager at my Yamaha Dealer. She called today to tell me that even tho I had my switch replaced last year, I may need to do another replacement if the switch does not have a yellow band on it near the plug.

and no I didn't wade though 14 pages of post to find out if this was posted in another tread. Sorry in advance.

I received a call from my dealer this morning. He wanted to inform me about the recall and he said he is ordering the parts for my ignition work. He didn't say anything about not riding the bike or anything like that (and I didn't ask)...wouldn't do any good anyway...I'm gonna ride.

I hope to get the chance to do so up-close photo work on the bottom part of the switch that is reportedly being replaced. When the part comes in, I may go up early without the bike so I can take some pictures of the new parts. I'll post them if I am successful. It will be interesting to see if this time, the mechanical and electrical engineers at Yamaha got together on this thing.

Regardless, I have ordered the bypass harness from Brodie, and fully intend to install it after the switch replacement, even if I am satisfied with whatever (if any) redesign there might be. No matter what they do, they will not produce a switch contact that will even come close to handling the current flow that the 70 amp relay in Brodie's bypass harness handles. Period.

+1 the pathetic excuse for a dealer i bought the bike through when i first came to the US has never sent me anything useful like the ECU recall, the ignition switch or anything, only occasional junk mail.

I really don't know how some of these outfits manage to obtain and keep their license from the bike manufacturers. Oh yeah and this is after playing dumb while trying to get me to accept delivery of a band new bike with a deep 5"+ gouge down the side of one of the side cases and scratches on the tank - pathetic is the only way i can describe it.

Got a call this afternoon from the dealer advising my bike is ready for pick up. Ignition switch replacment complete. I will pick it up tomorrow at lunch.

And just to include more information, my new 09 AE also is on the recall. I didn't ask when I picked it the bike up but when I went in for the new plates they pulled me aside and let me know that it does require the work and the parts are on order.

Good news for Canadians!!!!!!! :yahoo:

I spoke with Yamaha (Corporate) Canada this morning regarding the switch recall in the U.S. I gave my VIN to the customer relations girl and she confirmed that there was a "main switch" recall on my 2006 FJR. She said it had just been issued and to contact my dealer. She said a recall letter should have been sent to me.

My bike is in km/h and was purchased in Canada by the previous owner. It is equipped with the immobilizer system as all Canadian FJR's are.

So, maybe you Aussies might be getting some new switches as well. Then again, we are the favoured sons of the Commonwealth.

The recall notice for my '08, with immobilization circuit, arrived this morning from Yamaha Canada. Actually, only the envelope calls it a recall. The notice calls it a Factory Modification Campaign. I love the statement in bold that You are requested to avoid operating your motorcycle until this modification is performed. I'm sure glad they're arranging for delivery of my bike to my dealer (250km away). Right!

At least YC acted in a timely basis. Now I only have to wait for several feet of snow to disappear..................... :sadsmiley02:

This may have been covered in the previous 14 pages <gulp>, but just talked to my dealer and he said that they will be removing the key mechanism from the original ignition and putting it in the new one. Bottom line is you keep the same key.

Has anyone posted the actual dealer Tech Bulletin yet? I have a copy from my dealer showing the exact steps the dealer has to follow. I didn't want to wade through 14 pages of this thread to find out. I'll PDF it and email it to anyone willing to post it on their webspace for all to download.

Make sure there isn't a "copyright" insignia on it first please. If there isn't...we can host it here as well. If there is...PM and we'll see what we can do. We won't flaunt copyright invoked by Yamaha on this forum.....less they be less involved on future issues that might come up.
