FJRF003.1: Ignition Switch

You would have to wonder what could be the difference in an ignition switch on a US model and Australian model, we aren't affected by this recall.
My guess is we bitched louder. :rolleyes: That is a good question they are the same bikes aren't they?

 
Has anyone in here received the letter from Yamaha? I'm gonna call my dealer again tomorrow... and hopefully they won't give me the runaround again.

 
I was going to wait till the 29th to call my dealer and ask about the recall (figured I'd be a nice guy) when they shocked me and called on Wednesday afternoon to say that they had ordered the parts for the recall and if I could bring in the bike sometime after February 9th, as that is when they expected to have the parts. They told me it would take up to two hours to complete and I only have to give them 24 hours notice as to when I am going to bring in the bike. Since the weather here in CT has absolutley sucked this winter, I told them I am hoping to get it to them between the 19th and 23rd of February, weather permitting. They spoke like this was a ride in, sit in their lounge, drink their coffee, watch their TV, and then ride home in a couple of hours. We shall see.

 
I stopped at the Yamaha dealer today on my way home.. I asked the salesman if he had heard

anything about the FJR switch recall... He said , they had ordered 3 sets of parts in ,,

should be here next week..

I ask what was getting changed ,, he said,,, the whole switch assy. ,, New Key and every

thing...

Now granted ,, he hasn't seen the placement parts,,, the tech. wasn't in to talk to ,, and he was just

going by the computer info he had,,,

I don't really want TWO sets of keys for my bike,,, When and If someone knows more details

about the replacement switch ,, and if it's going to be re-keyed ,,, please sing out,,,,

From what I've read, you dealer is mistaken about the key. Even if he is correct you can still have one key cut that will open everything. One side of the key will be cut for all the original locks and the other side would be cut for the new ignition lock. To switch between old and new locks you would have to turn the key 180° before putting the key in in the lock.

Yes, the FJR Forum is specifically listed on the complaint concerning the Recall.

I have a 2008 FJR and just now got off the phone with my local dealer. I was told that they received notification last week but has not had any calls on the subject until mine today. I was told that they would immediately order the part (an entirely new ignition switch) and if it is immediately available, it should be in within 3-5 days and they will call me then to set up an appointment to have it replaced.

Questions I asked:

Q: Does the replacement call for the entire switch that will require having two sets of keys?

A: Yes, it looks as though you will get an additional key for the ignition only.

Q: Are the bike affected by VIN number?

A: All 2006-2008 and the early production 2009’s

Q: When was your shop notified of the Recall?

A: Late last week.

Q: How soon can I expect this service to be performed?

A: I will order several of the switches today and if they are available now, it should be in within 3-5 days. If not, you’ll have to wait until they become available in quantities to supply all of the units affected. Because you are the first that we know of to call to schedule an appointment, you may luck-out and get your switch replacement quickly, but once FJR owners start making appointments throughout the country and possibly the world, it may take some time for those that get caught in the rush, because riding season is getting set to begin and people will want to start riding all over.

 
I can't for the life of me understand why so many dealers/techs don't have a clue. The recall bulletin clearly states ( according to my dealer) the original tumbler/key will be retained with the new switch....soooo, no second key required.... :rolleyes:

We haven't had a reason to bitch, we haven't had any failures.

Nah, ya just got reverse polarity down there, simple.

No need to, we won't get any failures because our ignition switch IS different to yours according to Yamaha.

We never had the ECU issues either, ours is different to yours.

And by the looks of it on both counts, better than yours..... :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I dropped my bike off at the dealer tonight and they will start working on it tomorrow. I should get it back before the weekend.

 
I hear the bikes sent "Down Under" have ignition switches that rotate the key COUNTER-Clockwise to start. ;) Maybe that makes the difference? B)

 
My dealer (Del Amo Motorsports) finally found the recall (I had to call them several times). Part is on order and will be here shortly. Hopefully I won't have any issues riding out there for the install (70 mile trip).

Hey, you could be right.

Want me to send you one so you can ride your bike and trust it won't stop with an ignition failure ? :yahoo:

ROTFLMAO ........... that would be so KEWL but would I have to drive on the WRONG side of the road? :blink:

My dealership called me last night to inform me that Yamaha had recalled my bike. I have not gotten a letter from anyone. The service mgr said his paperwork mentioned too high resistance in the production switch. I have an '08 AE, S/N 1243. Since I only have 270 miles on it, I plan on returning it to the dealership for the 600 mile check-up for this recall. And since we are ass deep in snow here, that wouldn't happen until April or May.

Shadow ,, don't they have the steering wheels and the handle bars on the wrong side over there ?? :rolleyes:
