Rubber gromit around windshield track

The rubber gromit around my windshield track is hanging loose (genII) <_< . Anybody have experience with technique on fixing this before I tear into it. I put it in the shop (dealership) twice and asked that this be fixed while it was there, but the doofus that runs that particular shop does not seem to care about anything outside of normal maintenance and always "forgets" to get it fixed. :angry2:

Fixed mine this winter.

It's a real PIA, because you have to remove everything in the upper fairing except the headlight just to get to it so it can be re-glued. You need to remove the gages, wind shield drive assem., mirrors, etc., and that's after you get the upper fairing on the bench.

I used black weatherstrip adhesive to glue it back after cleaning both the rubber and the fairing.

I also have a service manual, which was a big help, and I would recommend using one.

It isn't that hard, but it is very time consuming.

Mine has been 'fixed' 3x now, using a variety of adhesives, including the one listed above. Each time it only came loose again. So I tossed it. It's useless, IMHO. Check out most 2 year or older feejers and you'll see it's a common problem and fix.

I had the same issue and tried clear Silicone adheasive. Still fell out. Remove the nose cone and take the piece out. It is worthless. Not quite sure why its even in there. Since taking it out I have ridden in the rain and the track doesnt get any wetter or stay any drying with or without it.

If I get a hold on the rubber with some sharp nose pliers, could I cut one side and pull it out without taking the front end off? Just wondering...

Great, thanks, you guys just saved me a lot of work and worry :clapping: . Will be heading to Vegas in the morning and it really had me worried.

Much more damage can/will happen if the rubber gets bunched up, puttting strain on the ~500 motor/drive assembly. Yank that rubber outta there!

Is that acually a glue or double sided stick um tape?

I would assume the stuff that comes in a tube. If you want to stick someting together forever, there is a product called ChemCaulk. It's a urethane caulk available from Fastenal and places like it. You will probably destroy the structure before it lets lose. It's impervious to just about everything, dries rock hard and lasts forever. IIRC it's about $6 for a regular tube of caulk size. If you get it on your skin, solvent helps get it off, but it may stay on you for about a week. If you get it on your clothes, it will never come off.

WW,It's a glue that's made for weatherstrip. It comes in a tube like silicone. I used Napa Super Black Weatherstrip Adhesive, part # 4051.

I clean both surfaces with alcohol, apply adhesive to one surface, put the strip in place, then pull it apart again and let it tack up for 2 minutes, then put it back on and let it set for 3 hours to fully cure.

If I was to do it again I would use either 3M Scotchbrite pad or fine sandpaper to scuff up the plastic before cleaning it. That will take the gloss off the plastic so the glue sticks better.If mine comes loose again I'll do that, but the third time and I'll do what dcarver said. It's much easier.

Well, after about 800 miles that friggin rubber came loose again. :angry2:

I don't have the time or patients to take the entire front end apart again, so I did what dcarver said to do and I cut and pulled the dam thing out of there.

Looks like that black wheatherstrip adhesive I used didn't do it (like dcarver said) so sorry about the bad advice.

You're welcome. Sorry you went through all the agony. I 'fixed' it 3x... then said :****: it, I'm done. No problems since, either. :lol:

I'm usually not the sharpest tool in the shed that’s why I'm going to try and fix mine. I asked the dealer if the Yamaha YES warranty would take care of it and he said Yamaha considers it cosmetic, so no they wont. I guess it will be cosmetic until it bunches up and ruins the motor... Maybe then they will fix it.

Anyway, I've got some super duty 3M double sided foam tape that I have hung small items on concrete block wall with that has never come down. I'm going to give that a try before I cut the grommet out. I think I can cut little blocks of the tape out and slide them through the slot so I shouldn’t have to take it apart.

This is what was used the last time mine was "repaired".

3M VHB tape

I believe it was the "black" colored 3M tape obtained from a local electrical supply house, used for adhering metal boxes to concrete walls.

Yamaha YES did cover the rubber thingy because it was originally torn loose by the dealer when my headlight assembly was replaced under warranty, and because it eventually bunched up and destroyed the windshield motor.

The Yamaha tech advised the dealer to replace the rubber gasket thingy (I like calling it "thingy") because it helps reduce the accumulation of dirt/grit/grime in the windshield mech channels. It really DOES serve a purpose, especially if you frequent dirt/gravel roads. (Ahemm, Carver!!!)

IMO, if you have the time and expertise to do the job yourself, it's worth doing. But definitely use a quick wipe of acetone or some other type of solvent to get everything perfectly clean of any leftover residue.

Just FYI, my rubber now has about 18 months in hot coastal temps and is still intact. Of course, having said that, it will undoubtedly fall off sitting in the garage and once again I'll be nervous about adjusting up and down.
