took my ticker in to the shop

As per a couple of riders on this forum I took my ticker in to GP sports in Santa Clara,Ca. Mark at the desk was real nice and asked a few of the right questions. Started up the bike he heard no sound. Let it warm up and there it was. He will call Yamaha today. Thanks to all who sent me info and responded. It started ticking at about the 6000 mile mark and I was unaware until Dale walker heard it when he installed my Holeshots. I waited until Yamaha was doing something about it. It now has almost 19,000 as in 2005 I was unable to ride most of the year for various reasons. I pulled out all the ticking data I had and its almost a manual. We will see what happens. I remember also registering with Sunnyside about my ticker in early '05. So I hope I have covered all the bases. Wish me luck!!!! Mike

Got a call back from the dealer today and guess what? They say cam chain tensioner!!! Fat chance from a documented ticker and now a small amount of oil useage. But I guess I have to start somewhere. Told the dealer most that get new tensioers don't fix the valve problem. So I guess I will see. Don't it just frost your balls. As I am writing I am getting pissed so I better stop. Morons!!!!!!!!!!!!! :angry: :angry:

Keep the faith bud, don't let them piss you off. They'll replace the tensioner as the quick fix, but it'll still tick afterwards if it's the guides. Just be persistent and cool and it'll get fixed.

one thing I forgot is the tech said they had changed the cam chain tensioner. I had the old one and that they have chnged to a different type. Is this true? I need ammo. Aren't all years the same? Have they changed them? I have an '03

When doing your research, did this dealer show a history of any FJR tick repairs? I'm feeling pretty fortunate myself, as one of the dealers in my town actually noticed another FJR ticking and repaired it on their own, after the owner took it in for a valve adjustment. You just have to play the game. They have to get authorization, and corporate probably requires them to work from simple to complex. Being without your mount is frustrating, but think back to waiting and savor the anticipation. It will (eventually) come back better, stronger and faster than before. Kinda like the 6 million dollar man!

It the same # all three years on the Yamaha parts list

BUT Yamaha has, in the past, used the same part numbers and modified the interchangeable part. IIRC the replacement valves have the same part numbers but are different.

They repaired one members bike. He has posted about procedure and I am following it. But the dealer seems to not want to go any farther. I believe they replace his cam chain tensioner also then he had to fight for everything. Tom melchild also recommended this dealer. So we shall see how many lies I am told.

FJRVTX,You'll have to be patient,look at it this way,Yamaha tells your dealer what to replace.If that doesn't fix your problem you just got a little preventitive maintenience free.the more parts they replace on your bike the better.

It's there dime brother.My bike was down for quite a while and they did the tick repair plus camchain tensioner plus camchain assembly.

As long as they are not giving you **** about fixing it and are trying to fix your bike you should be allright.If they are jacking you around get on the phone with yamaha customer service and get excited with them about ineptitude with your dealer. If you're not satisfied that your dealer is making an honest effort take it to someone else.Hang in there bro you'll get your bike fixed.It's just a bummer process you've got to go through unfortunately.

I don't know whose cookbook you're referring to, but I wrote "Yamaha's Advice for Ticker Owners" in March, 2005 and it's on my web site: www.bestbits.org/fjr1300.

Two things have changed since I wrote that. First, there is a new, cheaper diagnostic test to confirm a ticker. See the thread I'm starting tonight on that topic. Second, when the dealer finally gets authorization to do the repair, you absolutely must insist that the repair be done with the new exhaust valve guide seals, with the new part number. If you get a blank stare when you say that, or the dealer gets the equivalent of a blank stare when calling the Tech Line at Cypress, you've got to do battle.
