He's a slippery little bastard ... he beat out by a small margin in 07 and then gave me the "I'm toast, I messed up" BS story to lull me into a false sense of security this year.

Oh, you poor sap. I got burned by that one at least three times (Utah, Word, and IBR '07). It was ONLY this year in 2009 with the combination in Leg 2 of him actually screwing up in and I kicked butt in the second leg that he got nervous.

In fact, it motivated him in the third leg. His 5th place finish is because of you and me. He should be thanking us.....seriously! ;)

Matt, I would say you did one hell of a good job. Congrats!
Especially doing 1600 miles on the last day with a mechanical issue.

Great ride. It was a lot of fun following all the reports to see how everyone was doing!

:clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Congrats!!

What was the deal with the shock? Yamaha Shock? Aftermarket vendor?

Details possibly posted elsewhere?

Wilers 640 from the first Group Buy years ago bit the dust. Haven't taken it off yet to figure out details.

Had it (and the front forks) serviced by GP Suspension less than 4K before the IBR....so it was fresh.

My 642 failed during the SPANK in 08. A very small piece of gravel wedged itself between the seal and the shaft - and proceeded to wear a groove in the shaft which had to be replaced.

Needed to wait an extra week for the new part to arrive from Germany.

Klaus rebuilt it - and then I had him send me a 'sock' to cover it with. It now runs in dressed mode, wearing it's sock.

Kind of like a shock condom, eh Hal? Seriously, they sock sounds like a great idea.

I'm planning on the GP group buy coming up, but I don't know if I should have them rebuild my Wilburs or buy a new unit. I think Warchild had a rebuilt Wilburs blow on him too.

Are you sticking with the Wilburs?

Bill

It's Wilbers with an "e" actually, but I haven't decided yet. And I haven't torn off the shock yet to see what failed.

If it's because of some debris like Kaitsdad happen I'll probably should have it rebuilt and add a sock.

If it's some basic design issue and worn out...the yeah probably.

I bought the shock on the first group buy back in 2005 with Klaus and IIRC paid ~$615 for it including a remote preload adjuster. It was a tremendous value and served me well compared to a stock shock. Spending closer to $1K for an Ohlins or Penske would give me some pause. ;)

Perhaps it was mentioned elsewhere- I am new here, and lazy , too - but how many miles on the shock? They don't last forever ya know

Apart from the failure mechanism in your case, does the fluid not break down over time (OEM or aftermarket) necessitating a rebuild?

PS forget about that android in position #5 congrats on your fantastic finish!

I had it rebuilt about 4K before the IBR (meaning right before the Utah 1088). That was it's third rebuild...at about every 25K or so. They do a full inspection and would have said something if there were parts that needed to be replaced or that it was generally worn out.

OK, then I would be choked! 4K to failure is not good....FWIW I suffered much waste of time and money before concluding I needed a $1000 shock  Still don't have it yet, but that is where I am heading.

Well, whatever failed....I think it was internal. I pulled the shock and don't see any oil external to the shock or shaft issues.

Splooge on the body is typical for a motorcycle ridden 15,000 miles in 3 weeks and the running the hydrlaulic preload through it's full motion seems intact and normal.

I guess I'll send it off to GP and have them go through it carefully and see what they see.

The only thing I can think of is that when I had a lesser spring on it (625 that was undersprung) from the first round and was riding SPANK 2006 it seemed to get soft in the heat of the day and GP suggested it was the oil going to foam or something....temperature related. When the shock did go wonky it wasn't really hot and I hadn't been working the shock that much. Michigan and Wisonsin roads were smooth and it was in the low 80's....and I had since changed to a very reasonable 800 pound spring.

Iggie, what were the blown shock symptoms? Bad Pogo-ing? No rebound dampening? Nothing but spring?
No initial dampening....just seemed flat and like it was squatting on it's ass a bit. Over uneven pavement like surface streets it would get a bit squirrley...and start to hop if I gave it lots of brakes.

Not that I've ridden a hardtail, but it seemed like that.

Is it possible to blow the nitrogen portion of the shock and the oil part still work?
