Oh, you poor sap. I got burned by that one at least three times (Utah, Word, and IBR '07). It was ONLY this year in 2009 with the combination in Leg 2 of him actually screwing up in and I kicked butt in the second leg that he got nervous. He's a slippery little bastard ... he beat out by a small margin in 07 and then gave me the "I'm toast, I messed up" BS story to lull me into a false sense of security this year.
Especially doing 1600 miles on the last day with a mechanical issue.Matt, I would say you did one hell of a good job. Congrats!
Wilers 640 from the first Group Buy years ago bit the dust. Haven't taken it off yet to figure out details. What was the deal with the shock? Yamaha Shock? Aftermarket vendor?
My 642 failed during the SPANK in 08. A very small piece of gravel wedged itself between the seal and the shaft - and proceeded to wear a groove in the shaft which had to be replaced.Wilers 640 from the first Group Buy years ago bit the dust. Had it (and the front forks) serviced by GP Suspension less than 4K before the IBR....so it was fresh.
Kind of like a shock condom, eh Hal? Seriously, they sock sounds like a great idea.My 642 failed during the SPANK in 08. Needed to wait an extra week for the new part to arrive from Germany.
Klaus rebuilt it - and then I had him send me a 'sock' to cover it with. It now runs in dressed mode, wearing it's sock.
Sorry bout that. Still had a respectable finish. :clapping:Had it (and the front forks) serviced by GP Suspension less than 4K before the IBR....so it was fresh.
I gotta say it, Greg Marbach musta(?) done a GREAT job, Right?Iggy wrote "I still want to beat Marbach though..."

It's Wilbers with an "e" actually, but I haven't decided yet. And I haven't torn off the shock yet to see what failed. Are you sticking with the Wilburs?
Bill
Perhaps it was mentioned elsewhere- I am new here, and lazy , too - but how many miles on the shock? They don't last forever ya knowIt's Wilbers with an "e" actually, but I haven't decided yet. If it's because of some debris like Kaitsdad happen I'll probably should have it rebuilt and add a sock.
If it's some basic design issue and worn out...the yeah probably.
I bought the shock on the first group buy and IIRC paid ~$615 for it including a remote preload adjuster. It was a tremendous value and served me well compared to a stock shock. Spending closer to $1K for an Ohlins or Penske would give me some pause.
I had it rebuilt about 4K before the IBR (meaning right before the Utah 1088). That was it's third rebuild...at about every 25K or so. They do a full inspection and would have said something if there were parts that needed to be replaced or that it was generally worn out.Perhaps it was mentioned elsewhere- I am new here, and lazy , too - but how many miles on the shock? They don't last forever ya know Apart from the failure mechanism in your case, does the fluid not break down over time (OEM or aftermarket) necessitating a rebuild?
OK, then I would be choked! 4K to failure is not good....FWIW I suffered much waste of time and money before concluding I needed a $1000 shock Still don't have it yet, but that is where I am heading.I had it rebuilt about 4K before the IBR (meaning right before the Utah 1088). I use these on my mountain bike forks/shock. they work great.Seriously, the sock sounds like a great idea.
No initial dampening....just seemed flat and like it was squatting on it's ass a bit. Over uneven pavement like surface streets it would get a bit squirrley...and start to hop if I gave it lots of brakes.Iggie, what were the blown shock symptoms? Bad Pogo-ing? No rebound dampening? Nothing but spring?
