My windshield quit working, well, I guess it was still working as a windshield, but the motor would not raise or lower it.

After my searches for possible reasons, I pulled out the bunched up rubber gasket that was flopping around the windshield linkage arms. I just pulled all of it out of there, and now everything works great.

After reading about it, seems that rubber piece should have been stuck to the inside of the fairing, but in the 12,000 miles I've had the bike, it's been just laying in there.

So, I pulled it all out, through the slots the arms work in. Any need to pull the fairing and glue it all into place proper like? Or just forget about it?

The rubber is a large piece, it took some effort to cut it up enough to pull it out. Mines been out for 3,000 miles and I don't see a need to put another one in so it can fail again. So, my screen is rubberless..... :)

The fairing removal and replacement of the rubber thingy is a total PITA. Look at how much bugs and gunk you typically collect in that region. Looks like you live in Floriduh where the bugs grow large, proud and plentiful. The rubber thingy helps reduce the volume of crap that gets into the windshield channels. You be the judge.

I've removed my rubber about 10k miles ago, after trying to unsuccessfully to re-glue the parts I could reach and having it come off again. I know of cases were that damn thing got stuck in the rails and burnt out the screen motor.

I just make sure to regularly clean the rails with compressed air and water (if needed) and well greased.

I tried to pull off the nose peace but gave up/postponed until i have something more meaningful do do under there, like HID headlight upgrade or something.

I re-glued mine, but then I was taking the front fairing off anyway.

Actually, removing the fairing was the last straw for the rubber since it caught on one of the support arms while I was pulling it.

I chose to re-glue mine to reduce the crud getting in, but it won't stop it all.

It seems they used double-sided sticky tape to glue the rubber to the plastic. The rubber-to-tape was the face that was giving way. I used some contact adhesive to re-glue the rubber to the tape rather than spend a lot of time cleaning off the old tape.

It remains to be seen if my re-glue will be successful long term - it's not even seen rain since I did it, most unusual here

.

FWIW, if you do decide to re-glue it, I described within this lot how to remove the front fairing of my '06.

mcatrophy, excellent pictures of the r/r of the font cowl - thank you!

This will come in very helpful in the future when I eventually go to replace the rubber.
