Ok, so a buddy of mine and I are planning a trip in October to Barber for the AHMRA weekend (10/19-21),and it dawned on my that while we're there, if I wanted to go for a ride one day (will get there Thursday, watch races Friday/Saturday, leave Sunday) somebody on this thread should know about them. So anyone want to suggest some cool rides around Birmingham?

The coolest ride near the track: Take US78 just outside the race track through Leeds, AL(a few miles) and turn right onto AL 25 for a ride across 2 mountain ridges(read: twisties!) until you get to US231. At that point, turn around and ride halfway back and stop at 29 Dreams Motorcycle Resort for a while. Great place, friendly staff, and bound to be jumping that weekend. Only 25-30 mileslong (double that out and back), and likely to have lots of traffic that weekend, but it is great if you don't have a lot of time. It is known as "The Little Dragon" around here, and I do this ride at least every couple of weeks, usually when I'm on call and can't really go far.

I also like the roads in and around Cheaha mountain in Eastern Alabama: Take I-20 East from the track and follow the signs 50-60 miles just past Anniston, AL. It's the highest point in the state, and there are several twisty backroads in that area. Maybe Scab, who is from around there, will elaborate.

If you've got even more time, roads around Little River canyon are good, too; particularly AL 176, AKA Lookout Mtn. Parkway. It's up I-59N in NE Alabama near Ft. Payne(take AL 35 South), about 90 minutes away from Birmingham.

Hope this helps! You could even connect these rides if you want to do all of them in one day.

You have just gotta do Cheaha. It is about an hour ride out of B'ham, maybe less, depending on where you are staying. Beautiful scenery, famous twisties, restaurant and the whole nine yards at the top.

Would love to ride with ya and show you around.

Sorry so late to read original thread.

Next time, if I'm asleep at the keyboard, email me or something. I am also listed on the list maintained by JR. It's got my #'s.

Maybe we can hookup with Crewof1 and do the big loop. We could kill a good afternoon or morning.

I think there are some more FJR's in the neighborhood, Who else is out there?!

I'm in Birmingham... I'd ride with you guys. Ditto on Hwy. 25... there's a fun short-cut between Barbers and 29Dreams.

:good: :good: :good: :good:

I'll be there as well along w/my neighbor (1150RT) and friend (1150R). Will be staying w/my parents in Leeds on 411 in Oliver Crossing. They are on up in age and I have to ck up on them about every other month or so. So, I am scheduling my next visit there w/AMA. We all need to come up w/a plan to hook up and ride. Al 25 is a great twisty and steep! both up side and down side. Lot's of fun! a definate must do.

We're gonna be staying at the Birmingham-East Irondale Hampton Inn (or something like that...). My buddy rides an 1150RT, and sounds like Cheaha and 29 dreams are worth the effort.

Sounds like a feejer forum invasion is coming to Alabama! Let me know what you need and I'll be there!

If you're staying in Irondale, you're in the right spot.

My ST1300 buddy and I are considering a visit to Barber's this late summer, what's the best time weather wise?

McRuss, it depends on what type of weather you are looking for. If you're looking for hot, you'll have it. Just avoid the week leading up to 10/08/06, Nascar race week. Unless you're going, of course. If not, too many drunk idiots clogging the roads. Avoid it if you can. Other than that, it's just hot here most of the time.

I'll be at Barbers as well but on Sept. 22, 23rd time frame. I'll be on my way back from Helen, Ga. My intention was to tour the museum on Fri the 22nd. I will do that but they also have WERA races there that weekend. I will probably have to leave early on Sat the 23rd to head home as I have to be at work Monday. Ya'll have fun.

Just to resurrect this thread, since it's been 7 months from the original post... I'll be at Barbers with a friend for the AHRMA races (we're not racing, just spectators) on 10/19-22. We're going Houston to B-ham on the 19th, and returning on the 22nd. Was thinking about Cheaha or 29 Dreams, or both on Friday or Saturday too, schedule permitting. Would be happy to synch. up with anyone else in the area...
