As a pet? ;) What mission(s) would it need to serve?
I love pithy responses to vague and particularly subjective open-ended questions. ;)

I found a great deal on an OEM trunk, just wondering it the trunk is worth the investment?
Four possible answers:

a) Yes, absolutely. They make great tomato planters.

b ) No, they're anchors and ruin your 1/4 mile times.

c) Maybe, they're great if it's something you want.

d) It depends......

I bought my bike used and it came with the OEM trunk and back rest. I commute everyday and use the trunk almost exclusively. The wife loves having the backrest.

All that said, when you price it out, you're looking at damn near a grand for the whole set up if purchased new....pretty spendy. If my bike hadn't come with the trunk, I would have probably opted for the Givi or something similar.

If you aren't going to use it with a pillion the only advantage the OEM trunk may have over the Givi or Shad would be your 'good price'. Well, a good paint match too.

When used without a pillion on the seat the trunk can cause a slight wobble feel, it presents no control issue but you can feel the wobble. The trunk will only hold one helmet and the interior shape is odd which reduces cargo space more than you would expect. I have had no issues with cargo weight in the trunk.

My pillion prefers the OEM trunk without the backrest pad which would push her too far forward. This may depend on pillion size and how much arctic gear they wear during spring and fall riding.

You can find a mounting plate for the Givi that would give some back and forth location adjustment. Using the Givi rack mount you get better weight support on the rear sub-frame. The Givi also has an optional lighting kit for an additional running & brake light.

If I had it to do over again I would try a Givi, not because I dislike the OEM trunk but simply to see how the Givi would compare to OEM for cargo use. Seven day trips when two up taxes the OEM trunk space.

Mine came with it, but I have had a Givi 46. Colour match is a nice look, the big difference is the height, and perhaps a little more suitable for a pillion, although I do wish there was adjustability rearward. Keep heavier items elsewhere if you can, and be aware that a half-full box tends to jumble stuff around. I solved that by installing a Goldwing cargo net in the lid.

I like my Givi E460 Monokey. Fits 2 full sized helmets. Water tight. No drilling of OEM plastic.

I went with the Givi E52 when I bought my bike because it was significantly less expensive, and it turns out I'm glad I did.

The Yammy box is oddly shaped, as previously stated, so its volume is not as useful as you'd expect. It also has very thick sides, so its inside is a lot smaller than its outside. Lastly, the rated weight capacity of the Givi was higher than the Yammy box, and 13 pounds versus 7. (Seven pounds??!?!?! Seriously!!??!?!)

Givi swallows 2 full-faces easily, with scrunch room for lots of soft goods around and in them. At work I keep my gear (jacket and overpants) in the top case, and helmet in a side case. The Givi is wider than the Yammy, so putting my jacket in it involves only a single fold and it lays flat. Couldn't do that in the Yamahamahamahamahama box.

As for your question of is it a good deal, that depends on the deal. If you're getting it for a hunnert bucks, by all means do it. But if you're looking for something actually useful, I think you ought to look at the Givi or Shad cases.

EDIT: Just thought of another space comparison. I can carry a package of 24 double rolls of Angel Soft toilet paper in the Givi. Not a chance in hell with the Yammy case!!!! :D :D :D

IMHO the OEM trunk is way overpriced just like a lot of Yamaha OEM stuff. Lots of people on here using GIVI trunks but if you're persuaded to look at other vendors, I suggest you check out the SHAD trunks also. They're nicely engineered with quality equal to GIVI but offer better value.

I bought one when I bought my 10 but canceled it due to some hymming and hauling around. So happy I did! Over priced, and NO LIGHTS! How stupid is that? It also was way more money than the Givi 52 with the AddMore lights! If it is 100 bucks and you want to try out a trunk then yes jump on it it will work. I had no deal and had to make a choice of what the best bang for the buck for me. It is a great color match for my bike and the quality seems very nice.

I have the oem trunk. Mainly because I work for a MamaYama dealer and got a killer discount on it but also because its all the trunk I needed as well. I will concede that it is smaller, MUCH smaller, than the Givi counterparts. But I went out on the Feej for a month and a half earlier this year and had no problem carrying enough gear, extra clothes, food, etc. between the saddles top case and p-seat pack. Tank bag was mainly used for my gps/maps, phone, ipod, and emergency supplies/rain gear. The drilling of the plastics was a little concern for me because I am very fearful of purchasing a trade in bike that has modified the body, but the rear section of the frame has the tapped out holes for the bolts right under the plastic so this bike was "designed" for it I guess....

I looked at the factory Yamaha case and others before settling on the Givi E52. It's enormous, matches the paint on my '08 perfectly in gloss black, and with the AdMore light kit, really adds to visibility. The only thing I would have done differently is the mounting. It's currently mounted on an adapter plate from SWmotech. I've had it with it wiggling around and have ordered the Givi mount. Everything I've read would indicate that the Givi mount is rock solid rather than the bowl of Jell-o that my current setup is.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I'll be looking more to the GIVI then. It's a pretty good deal but the Givi seems to be the better buy.

I too got a great deal on a used trunk and mounting plate for my 1st gen. I think it was only $350? I drilled the requisite holes in my tail section (not required for 2nd gens) and mounted the trunk. It worked pretty much as advertised, except...

For the size of the thing it just doesn't hold very much. That is because it is made with an inner hard liner, which is much smaller than the outer shell. My belief is that Mamma Yamma did that to limit the stuff you can carry (for liability reasons). With all the air space between layers, it would make a dandy rear cooler, but for actually carrying stuff when you are 2-up (that's when you NEED extra space, right? and out on the road, the OEM trunk just doesn't cut it for us.

I also was not real fond of the "lines" of the OE trunk, but that is highly subjective.

In summary: No, it wasn't worth it (even at that low price) to me.

I sold off the trunk and mounting plate, plugged up the two new holes in the tail section, and bought a GIVI mounting rack and color matched V46. I like the GIVI mounting system better than the OE, the metal rack support feels more substantial, the looks of the V46 are more appealing to me (subjective) and I like the ability to easily upgrade that to an even larger bag some day, should I ever need it in the future.

I also have GIVI bags set-up on my Vstrom, so the bags can be interchanged should I ever have a need to do that.
