I'm not starting an oil thread, I just need someone to check their owner's manual and tell what it states for proper weight oil. 2006-2010 bikes please.

Thanks,

Canadian FJR

To answer the OP's request directly:

2006 - 2008 the owners manual specifies Yamalube or SAE20W-40

2009 and up 10W-40 or 20W-50

My Yami dealer said the Yamilube 20w-40 was replaced with the 20w-50. The year of the bike didn't matter.

The engine in the FJR is essentially unchanged since the beginning, any oil specification change will be 100% backwards compatible. If the 2009 oil specification is 10W-40 or 20W-50 then those oil weights should be correct for even a World 2001 model.

In the beginning: the 'World' FJR owner's manual ('01) shows a chart for recco'd oil viscosities for the FJR engine.

These are:

  1. SAE 10W-40 (for the widest range of temps -- 15*F ~ >110*F)
  2. SAE 15W-40 (32*F ~ >110*F)
  3. SAE 20W-40 (40*F ~ >110*F)

MamaYama, in America (Cypress), had oil bottled (for dealer retail) by a private company that only had 20/40 (and, now 20/50) hence the recommendation. :(

Heavy oil is usually recco'd for more "agricultural" engine designs (read: big v-twins) that tend to abuse their parts more than the more modern, refined/close-tolerance, FJR engine. (maybe Gen IIs are "built-loose-to-last"?)

You do your FJR engine no favors by running heavy oil.
