Ok, my plans for attending WFO are to take 6 days to get from Houston to Reno... going to enjoy the roads on the way out and while I'm at the rally, because I'm doing a BBG and SS2K on the way home on the slab.

Days 1 (21st) and 2 (22nd) get me from Houston to Austin (short trip Friday night) and Austin to the vicinity of Las Vegas... New Mexico. Most if not all of Day 2 will be on Highway 84, through Abilene, Lubbock, Clovis and Santa Rosa (nothing too exciting).

Here's where I'd like any additional insight. I talked to a couple folks from this board, and also read a few of the regional threads on the board. I also reviewed the roads identified here for each of the states... Motorcycle Roads

Day 3 (23rd) is primarily riding roads in Northern New Mexico. From Las Vegas, I go North on Hwy 518 to Mora, then go North on Hwy 434. This eventually deadends in Hwy 64, which I take West to Taos, where I jump on Hwy 68 for a short southern leg, and eventually turn south on Hwy 518. A few miles down the road I jump onto Hwy 75 going West, and then turn onto Hwy 76 to Questa. In Questa I take Interstate 285 south to Hwy 502 West, which goes through Los Alamos, and then becomes Hwy 501... which eventually runs into Hwy 4, which I take West. Hwy 4 deadends at Hwy 550, which I take West and North to just past Cuba. There I turn North on Hwy 96, all the way till it runs into Hwy 84. Hwy 84 takes me all the way North to Pagosa Springs. Total miles for the day is 418.

Day 4 (24th) is primarily riding roads in Southwestern Colorado. From Pagosa Springs I take Hwy 160 West to Durango, where I get onto Hwy 550 going North all the way to Ouray. In Ouray, I turn around, and backtrack to CR-8 which goes West to Ophir, eventually deadending on Hwy 145. I'm thinking I'll skip turning North to Telluride, and instead go South to Cortez. In Cortez I get onto Hwy 491 going Northwest to Hwy 141, which I take North to Hwy 50... a short North trek on 50 gets me to Grand Junction. Total miles for the day is 427.

Day 5 (25th) is primarily riding roads in Southern Utah. From Grand Junction I take Interstate 70 West to Crescent Junction where I jump on Hwy 191 going South. Eventually I come to Hwy 95 which I take West and North to Hwy 24. Take Hwy 24 West to Hwy 12 going South. This eventually runs into Hwy 89, which I take south to Hwy 14, which I take West into Cedar City. Total Miles for the day is 543. I could lop off about 150+ miles by staying on Interstate 70 all the way to 24, and then taking it south. This would eliminate the big loop to the south on Hwys 191 and 95.... are they worth the extra mileage?

Day 6 (26th) is primarily riding roads through Nevada to get to Reno. From Cedar City I take Hwy 130 North to Hwy 21, which hits Hwy 50. Take Hwy 50 West all the way to the promised land (Reno). Total Miles for the day is 517.

So if you have comments or expertise in any of these areas, feel free to chime in. If you see something that I should take a few moments to go see near the path, let me know that too.

Thanks for looking... should be quite the adventure...

First of all, that is one helluva ride you got planned. That, fellow riders, is a road trip. You're in for some awesome 2-lane riding. I've been on some of the roads you got lined up in N.M., CO. and Utah. Great stuff!

Actually, your day 5 looks like a long one due to highly scenic but possibly slow, winding roads. Are you traveling single squad? If so then you can operate at your own pace, of course, get a 6:00 a.m. start and cover the whole thing.

Is it worth doing that loop? Probably. Hwy 191 from the 70 to Hwy 95 is decent but not overly so. I've never been on the Hwy 95 section but it looks pretty good. I have been on 24 through Capitol Reef and 12 through Escalante and such and those are some of the best that Utah has to offer.

There are a lot of little towns on 12 that have gas.

Your ride through Colorado is world class motorcycling. There is not better route in the world. There may be some as good, but none better. Enjoy, I know I did when I took the majority of that route. The one difference was I came down from Denver rather than from Texas so I skipped the Pagosa Springs route. My trip to Reno isn't nearly as good as yours. I live about 90 miles from Reno!

On Day 4, between map markers 13 and 14, you are passing by a Town called "Ignacio". You should stop in and get a picture of Iggy's Home Town. I'm sure he would appreciate the memories.......( or at least the mammeries)

FJRchick,

I'll wave when you pass overhead... :D

Flyinglow,

I agree about Day 5 looking long. I am currently flying single squad... and for this trip I don't mind that too terribly. I really want to set my own pace, stop when I want to, keep pushing when I want to.. etc. I'm an early riser normally, so I don't think an early departure on that day will be a biggie. Plus, if after days 1-4, I feel I'm getting burned out... I can shorten the route then... and still catch the last 2/3 of it.

Orangevale,

Thanks tons for the road suggestions. As you can see, I'm going to get in almost all of them.

Bearly Flying,

I'd be happy to snap a photo for Iggy if he wants one. Iggy, you want a photo of my FJR in front of a sign for your namesake city?

+1 on the 50 hoiway route. I live in CO and my favorite long ride is to head west, take 50 all the way to reno, north to Susanville, and west to the coast on 36. Some find 50 boring, but it is quiet, has few cars, and is supremely beautiful. Triple digit touring if you want it!

Spectacular riding!

Groo, when are you leaving? Haven't left yet? I live in Pagosa Springs and you're more than welcome to spend the night here or have a breakfast of cup of joe or whatever. Just don't pass thru without a HI. Jerry

Groo.....you want to plan my route down from Ontario, Canada (I'm impressed)....I'm leaving the 22nd of July to get to WFO....& leaving myself about 2-3 weeks to find my way home....so Groo....show me the light?....

hey i can help! you and girlyfriend ride down to fort worth. hang out here for a bit, then hook up with Groo and ride over to NV with him. see, easy! ;)

Jerry,

I'd love to meet up with you while in Pagosa Springs... it is currently on the flight plan for arrival on July 23rd (Sunday). I've got a hotel room, but if you're serious, and it wouldn't be an imposition, give me a PM on staying the night... and since you should be intimately familiar with the roads in that area, I'd greatly appreciate any comments you have on the routes I've chosen.

I guess I should have stated what days I'm travelling in the first post to make it clearer... but here they are:

Friday July 21st - Houston to Austin

Saturday July 22nd - Austin to Las Vegas (New Mexico)

Sunday July 23rd - Las Vegas to Pagosa Springs (Colorado)

Monday July 24th - Pagosa Springs to Grand Junction (Colorado)

Tuesday July 25th - Grand Junction to Cedar City (Utah)

Wednesday July 26th - Cedar City to Reno (Nevada)

Thursday July 27th to Sunday July 30th - Reno and surrounding area

Sunday July 30th - Reno to Kansas City (Doing a BBG)

Monday July 31st - Kansas City to Dallas (SS2K completion) and then Houston (pass out)

Mike,

It's all I can do to figure out where to point myself... ;) If I was coming down from Canada, I'd try to pass through something like Yellowstone or Jackson Hole (have been there in the past and loved it). Just play connect the dots with various places... or try that link for good motorcycle roads for good riding ideas.

Your right....& I do have some ideas....but thats mainly for the return trip....I think it will be a case of point & go....seeing how I given us 5 days to get to WFO....booked in for Wed night....looking forward to seeing you there....don't forget that box full of SPECIAL gerbils for our buddy, pal, friend Mr. TWN...talk @ you later Groo....Mike :)

Groo, a possible rte. change when you are in Angelfire,NM you are taking a long rte. that's pretty but not outstanding. I think you might be better off taking 64 north out of Taos, imo it's a prettier rte. but beauty is subjective. :D The rte. you've chosen is ok but I don't think it justifies the time you'll be spending riding it. If you get into Pagosa early enough I'll take you over to Lake City, now that's a gorgeous ride. Jerry
