We placed tamper-resistant tape over their laptops.... this was an Old School rally: paper maps only

Doug Chapman was very sad he could not use his laptop for route planning:

George Zelenz knew to bring his paper maps:

Did GZ forget he had his gloves on when he went to pick his..clean his nasal passages?

Great photos! It actually looks like everyone is having fun.....

I don't know who Steven Hobart is, but damn! he can take some great photos! :good:

can someone please explain the comdom thing to those of us who somehow missed how it relates to LDR.

What's funny is I scrolled down slowly thru the posted photos, saw the condoms and singles, followed by the comment of GZ bringing his paper maps. I didn't see the photo with the actual paper maps at first...

Looks like it was a fun time.

Don't suppose there is a link to what this rally was.... i looked a bit but didn't see anything.... ?

sorry for being clueless..... just trying to keep up from over the big pond!

A few more of the more excellent photos.....

l-r: Check-In/Tech Inspection. Here is Paul Peloquin, kitsdad, Ignacio. Standing behind them in a blue shirt is FJRForum member Chris Purney (eeksnake):

l-r: Art Montoya, beerme and SkooterG heading out for their Odometer Check. SkooterG lost half of his electrical system before the rally even started: he ran the entire event with no headlights, no radiator fan, and no heated gear whatsoever. And he *still* came in 2nd Place!!!

FJR pilot Tom Melchild (Cal24Master) studies the rally format instructions. Tom finished well inside the Top 10:

Old School route planning!! Here SkooterG ponders the paper maps while TurboDave in the background does the same:

FJRForum members Roger Van Santen and Doug Chapman also analyzing the maps. Doug is seen here wearing a WFO-5 Superbrace ball caps (I had a large number of leftovers) were used in place of a traditional rally towel:

Should we give LDRyder here a blast of **** for wearing a Hardley shirt at this event? Normally, yes, but this rally virgin was a Friday morning *walk-on*, had never done a siongle organized Endurance Rally before, and finishesd in 10th Place ahead of some *very* seasoned LD veterans:

I caught a little rain on the Hayabusa coming down to Ely..... for 400 continuous miles! that was a treat..... :glare:

The "live" checkpoint at Middlegate, Nevada, truly the Center of Nowhere! That's Paul Peloquin walking in the center, and Eric V (red shirt) studying his map:

Here is beerme tosses a horseshoe at the Middlegate checkpoint. Cognoscente riders are a tough lot: check out that .40 S&W on his right hip:

The car belonging to the original owner of Middlegate Station...... it's a lonely place....

Riders were told to bring back any one of three following different items: a horseshoe, a whore's red garter, or a dried-up cow patty. Most brought back either a cow patty or a horseshoe, but Ignacio brought me this excellent Whore's red garter that I am modeling here:

Not to diminish the relevance of the rally reporting, but damn! This photography is killer!
Yep. Steve is a fuking amazing photographer. He is a CHP Sgt. Or perhaps he recently retired. Not sure. A really, really, big boy who rides a Goldwing and one hell of a nice guy. Big in the LD scene. He was one of the scorers during the last IBR and rode one himself a few years back. These days, he is frequently seen hanging around LL. Her personal little bitch.

(Don't tell him I said that)

But damn. The boy can handle a camera. (A really big fancy one with all kind of farkles at that. Can you say $$$$?))

And jeese, did ya notice those frickin pie pans that Arty-Farty calls auxilliary lighting on his FJR? Christ! That boy loses 4mpg just due to the resistance to the mass release of all those gazillions of photons. Not to mention the sub-optimal aerodynamic properties of those mothers. But you know what they say..........Big aux lights, little ****. :whistling:

Unfortunately, I am no 'Steve Hobart, Photography God', but here are a few of my photos.........

Due to some screw up, many of us were not able to stay at the primary motel that the rally was run out of.........so we were sent to the Hotel Nevada a couple of blocks away. Ummmm........I think 'quaint' would be a word some would describe the level of accomodations. Not me, but I am sure some would. At least they cordoned off parking for us right in front of the entrance.

Ewwwwww.....there's one of the feet.

Iggy getting his first and much needed forum fix at the post-rally banquet. And my....isn't he a fine example of high style!

WORD099.jpg

Warchild about to dig in on one of his favorite meals. Hell, he likes cow pies so much, he had many of us bring some back for him. Also of note, the chic-sexy garter belt he is sporting. After a severly sleep-deprived Iggy had one beer and caught a gander of Warchild sporting said garter belt, it was rumored that he was heard to have said, "I'd **** him". Most of us wouldn't doubt it.

On the return trip, a ride through never-been-to-before Cedar Breaks National Monument.

And a stop at the north rim of the Grand Canyon for some lodging scouting for an upcoming ride I am planning.

And, one shot Avon Azaro rear tire. Amazing what these Cognoscente events will do to rear rubber. This is the least amount of miles I have ever gotten out of an Avon. About 5500 or HALF of what I normally get.

Yep, now you appreciate why we always insist on new tires at a Cognoscente event..... :D
