Stopped by and purchased some final gear oil from a shop but it is the honda final gear oil (80W90). Is it okay to use this oil or should I go with the Yamaha brand.

Be careful, I used Honda oil in my FZ6 once and my left nut dropped off. Boy did I learn a lesson.

 
There is supposedly something very special about rhe rear drive oil for the FJR - Yamaha doesn't recommend that you use the same stuff they use in their cruiser rear drives for some reason and they do not publish the specs for the whale oil that they charge 3 arms and a leg for.

Having said that, until now I've been using synthetic Hypoid Gear Oil 75/90 but recently scored a bottle of Yamaha's magical elixir on Ebay for cheap.

I suspect it won't make any difference at all, but at least I'll know I tried and that I didn't go overboard expense-wise for having tried.

 
I strongly suspect the only thing “special” about the final drive oil for the FJR, which Yamaha puts in perfectly measured little half-pint bottles for $38, is the gullibility and assumed depth of pockets of the owners. I asked a Yamaha mechanic about this and he looked like he was trying to sell me undercoating as he regurgitated Yamaha’s ******** about “it’s the only oil they recommend.” **** ‘em. How much can a pumpkin cost? I’ll replace the ******* thing if that’s what it takes to call their bluff. I’m using a synthetic of the required grade; just waiting for recommendations on brand.

We’ve seen this ******** before, from almost every corporation on the planet. My HP printer won’t work anymore because one of 6 ink cartridges has “expired.” The problem for Yamaha is my FJR isn’t plugged into the internet.

 
About the only question I'd ask in reply is just how we know that the 'required grade' is? Since they don't specify it.

 
FJR's and the Vmax have the same final drive except for gear ratio. The newest Vmax design has a different final drive.

Anyway, the recommended oil for the Vmax drive is hypoid gear oil SAE 80 (API GL-4) or multigrade SAE 80W-90 -- nothing special.

Which makes you woinder why Yamaha goes out of it's way to produce a special oil for one and not the other - possibly because the FJR tends to run at higher average speeds and the riders twist the wrist more than they would on a cruiser.

I know 3 guys with new Vmax's. All 3 of them have right forearms like popeye. It's being caused by one of two things...

Some straight line boys with the old cruiser will romp the FJR. I know, I own both and the rear drive looks the same. 80/90 works

 
I use Wal-Marts Supertech Synthetic gear oil mixed with about a handful of this stuff. It keeps everything clean and shiny!
