I dearly love my 04 FJR, however, periodically, I've had trouble starting the bike. Earlier, I had a problem starting the bike after shutting the bike off without it fully warming up, thus causing a flooded engine situation. Another time a marginal battery was the suspected culprit, even though the motor spun freely. Last August I went down to the garage to get the bike, no start, so I grabbed the KLR for the trip. A new battery got the bike started later.

Last week, I went to get the bike for the trip over to Mid Ohio Sport Car Track for a track day on KTM's, and it wouldn't start. Turns over like crazy but no fire. The OEM battery is less than a year old and is always kept on a Battery tender, and it has half a tank of fuel. The bike was ridden four weeks ago on a 1500 mile trip without incident and was ridden 3000 miles to Florida in March for BikeWeek, no problems. The bike runs flawlessly otherwise.

I did the Barbarian Jumper mod (+7 all cylinders) a couple years ago, and the valves were adjusted at 32,000 miles and the throttle bodies synced, new plugs, etc. The bike now has 38,000 miles on it.

I am quite sure the bike is flooded at this time. It was really hot outside when I went to start it, and I am thinking the F/I system loaded up the cylinders with an over rich mixture for the ambient temperature. It seems to start okay when it is cooler outside, but the last two times it wouldn't start it was in the nineties.

I tried the WFO method, without success. I could smell raw fuel at the back of the bike. What can I do the remedy this situation? I would like to ride this bike for a long long time, however, it will be replaced if this continues.

Any help is appreciated.

From the comments I've read on this forum there are two things one can do to help the bike start when it's sit unused for awhile.

Cycle the ignition on and off two or three times before attempting a start. When you first switch on the ignition the fuel pump is cycled on by the ECU for a brief period to ensure that the fuel rail supply is properly pressurized. If the bike has been sitting for a few days the pump may need to be cycled more than once.

After you've pumped up the fuel system you can try a start. If it doesn't fire quickly you should open the throttle halfway and crank again.

You should look at the Troubleshooting Charts in your owner's manual. Check fuel, compression, ignition, and battery.

Please, let's not start a fifth thread on the same issue you've personally had please. It stunned me to see you've posted that many threads on the same subject over the years and I was starting to think there was a problem with the FJR...when it more likely is mostly just your bike.

Don't misunderstand me...I hope you can get your bike ultimately fixed, but:

Please post in the original thread.

For reference one can see the other numerous threads here, here, here....and probably elsewhere too.

Thanks.
