The ST1100 is the most common police bike followed by the ST1300. There has been 2 Police fatalities on ST1300's due to unprovoked tank slappers at 90 plus speeds. One was on a training excercise. He was a rookie on the bike, he lost it and was thrown under a truck. There have also been reports of the same happening to civillian ST1300 owners, although I am not sure if there have been any fatalities.
This has led to the Irish Police force taking all ST1300's off the road and the English Police putting a blanket 80mph restriction on all ST1300's. There has been some legal action between the Police and Honda. The police trying to prove that the vehicle was ''not good for purpose''. Apparantly they could not prove that it was not rider error so the Police lawyers dropped the case.
Before we bought our first FJR I spoke to a bike cop who said that if they had the choice it would be FJR's without doubt. I have seen one at a race meeting on a Police display stand, in Police colours, but never on the road.
I spoke to a bike cop today. He was on an ST1100. I joked about him having sent his 1300 back to Honda and he said ''they are OK and accepted now, they do wobble a bit now and again but you just deal with it'' (!!??).
He went on to say that he had heard that over the next few years all Brit police bikes would be replaced by BMW boxers which he said were probably the worst choice for the job as they are not geared well for around town.
What is the predominant cop bike in the States?
