Ok Guys,

I've been riding a cruiser for the last 20,000 miles and I'm used to keeping the rpms low in general for just riding around.

In my first few rides on my 05 FJR I've been playing around with the revs and I've found it's really fun to let it run around 4,500 rpm in second or third gear because it feels like the engine just wants to explode with power. When I WOT it just screams until about 8,000 and it's a hell of a great feeling.

Is it okay to run around at 4,500 to 5,500 as a matter of course, I know to my ears it sounds like the engine is working hard, but I'm coming from a Low revving cruiser.

Thanks.

As long as you keep the oil changed on a semi-regular basis and the bike is not overheating, you should be able to run whatever RPM you want (short of redline) for extended periods of time. Certainly 4500-5500 RPM is no worry.

SOOO

Whats the question?

Are you over reving the engine?

Doesn't "sound" like it (pun intended)

I asked this same question a while back, specifically regarding running the bike at triple digits on lonely desert highways for long miles and the response was a unamious yes, it's fine. 4500 revs is only half of your redline. I now ride mine purposely in the 4k-4500 and not only does it get better fuel economy, but it's been proposed that it's better for the motor by preventing carbon build-up on the valves.

Edit: I wanted to add, rev that puppy up to 6500 RPM, thats about 80mph in 3rd gear. Talk about he motor wanting to explode with power! Ive gotten the front end light at highway speeds ---which quickly become courtroom speeds--- Whoa baby, Hang on tight!!

The engine in the FJR is built for those higher revs.

You may also find that gear changes at the lower end of the spectrum (a la cruiser style) are notchy, not smooth and generally disgusting. Shifts made at >4000rpm however, are much smoother, slicker and generally put a smile on ya dial.

Just do it.

I just completed a 3300 mile coast to coast run and kept the revs in that range for 80% of the trip. The bike ran flawlessly.
