My son just called and said he is off to Mojave Viper in Twenty Nine Palms California for Marine Corps training. Not necessarily the California he wanted to first experience (No offense to any of our Twenty Nine Palms resident's).

He will spend a month in combat scenario's in a "real world" desert city type of environment with buildings, Iraqi American role players, live fire, etc...in preperation for his deployment. Training which, hopefully, he will never have to use.

He is a member of First Battalion, Ninth Marines also known as "The Walking Dead" based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After seeing the sacrifices that he has already made and knowing the ones he will make in the future, my heart goes out and my hat is off to all the veterans who have gone before him and those currently serving with our armed forces. You have my utmost, undying respect.

You can rest assurred he's getting the best training available. I was working on a trip to 29P to take a look at some of the training and thought I might be there when 1/9 is, but looks like I'll be going afterward.

Amazing how perspective comes into play - as a Marine there are patches and unit emblems that are pretty cool - that is until you look at them from a parent's perspective!! On the off chance I do get out there, what Company/Squad is he in?

Be sure to thank him for his service, and even though I'm not a very religous person, God bless him.

Never was able to serve myself, but have a lot of respect and appreciation for those that do / did.

Your son and his comrades have my sincere respect to joining in these times.

As a former jarhead linguist, I have a small, but useful bit of advice for him: take the time to learn a few Iraqi words and study the culture. My Russian platoon had a saying, "More effective killing through better understanding." Who knows, it might help in some way.

Jim, he is in Bravo Company, 3rd Platoon. Not sure which squad.

They have been learning 7 arabic words a week for the past month or so, have had to learn to count up to 20, and are being instructed in Iraqi customs etc....

One of my Marines just returned from Mojave Viper; he was tasked as part of the support element that runs the pre-deployment training conducted there. The environment there is as close to the real thing he will experience until he is BOG (boots on ground) in theater. Pass on to him that he needs to treat it as the real thing, as I am sure his leadership is already doing (train like we fight, and we fight like we train). Your support is what will get him through any challenge and every mission. Semper Fi.

Axe, Wayne and all other Marines

Here is a joke from my dad (Marine) to my Grandfather (Navy).

A young man goes in to the Navy recruiters office. He really wants to join the Navy. The Naval Recruiter tells him he is to small to join and sends him on his way. The young man attemps several more times and each time the Naval recruiter turns him away.

The young man turns to the Marine recruiter down the hall and is instantly signed up. The young man asks the Marine why the Navy would not take him. The Marine answers, Its obvious, they will not take you because you have both a mother and father

A translation for the Naval impared. The Navy only takes *******s :p

With much respect to all service branches!!!!
