Ok you asked for it you got it. A poll that looks at how one should approach getting back in the saddle after a get off. Clearly no one can call Scab or MM2 a puss, they got beat up real good. the point here is that the severity of the crash likely plays a role in the overall time needed to get the gumption.

Well lest see where this leads us...

Took my shoulder 6 weeks before I could ride again. Hurt like hell when I did, but ohhh the grins B) I couldn't wait to get goin again, so get yer arse back on the bike ASAP :)

I crashed my FJR, picked it up and rode it home to then jump (more like climb) onto the Wabs and ride another 150 miles. Oh, I had two busted ribs and a punctured lung that I didn't know I had. But I still think if you're feeling uneasy, you should walk away and come back to it another day... Just pull out your knitting bag or measuring spoons to keep your mind off of it.

:p

My father-in-law dropped his Shadow in gravel near the Blue Ridge Parkway this summer, broke his right collarbone. Bike damage: brake pedal bent backwards, right handlebar bent up and back, scuff marks on windshield and saddlebags. Had help picking it up, rode it the 40 miles back to his hotel. Said it was a good thing the handlebar was bent so he didn't have to reach as far.

Missed a couple of weeks' riding and a one week's bowling, got right back in to both of them, at 73!

Damn son, I was joking. Did I forget the smiley?

Well pops, thought you were on to something to i thought i would giver a whirl. So far its lookin intresting. There is a discontinuity that I think will imerge that I will prolly pull outa my arse on Friday if it holds true (for interesting fun).

Well, I called myself a ***** and didn't like hearing it  . I just got back from my ride around the city and realize the mindwas playing tricks on me. It wan't as bad as my subconscious made me think, nobody shot out of sidestreets(closely, anyway) and for the most part I didn't put myself in a position that I couldn't get out of quickly and easily. Just a bunch of todoo about nothing.

By the way, it's spelled Evil w/ a capitol E. Other than that, :****: :p

I think my main fear was reliving that accident all over again on my first ride out, trust me if I had been 2 in's further to the left I know I'd be dead, not a doubt in my mind. 220lbs at (probably) 50-60mph into my chest w/ maybe 4sq in overall mpact area means at minimum a tamponade, but more likely a torn Aorta and dead. Plus having all that time to replay it in my head over and over. It was in syndication w/ in 3 weeks and M.A.S.H was outplayed by it. :glare:

But all better now, this ride let me dispel those demons, finally. Now just gotta keep the speed down a little.

After my bad get off in 2002, I bought the replacement bike before I was healed enough to ride!
i totalled my 2003 roadstar on vacation, rented a car, then rode the bike home on the way home when the bike was fixed, after the driving vacation was over...

i destroyed my 2005 fjr at eom 05 on 9/12/05, ordered my 2006 from d&h on 9/28/2005...

wait.. looking above.... guess i'm a *****...

oh well...

:yahoo:

Ok you asked for it you got it. A poll that looks at how one should approach getting back in the saddle after a get off.
Fixed that poll structure. Seriously.

Your poll (like most polls) should allow the user to select only one answer. Checkboxes are not what you want in this case, since more than one answer can be selected by the poll-taker. Swapped them out for radio buttons, which allows users to submit only one answer.

If this were the case, pony would never chase bad guys on foot again. :D

My collision with a forest-rat hasn't affected my desire to ride at all, but my disdain for the stupid critters has increased tenfold. I even growl at the signs indicating their presence, and have been know to make pistol-shooting gestures with my hands when passing them. My collision resulted in a broken ankle but that didn't stop me from doing a little riding with the cast on.

I'm not strictly eligible for the poll, since my down-time was not due to a get-off, but I replied anyway.

Initially, my thought was to get back on the bike as soon as physically possible. Four weeks after my neck was fused, just days out of the neck brace, I rode my FJR and was in heaven for a couple of hours. Could hardly believe how much I'm missed riding. But, I guess the sheer joy masked the pain because that short ride set my recovery back, leaving me flat on my back for several days.

Six weeks later, I got back on a bike again and got that same adrenaline rush. This time, I'd missed the bike even more since I'm now awake and relatively alert most of the time.

So, my suggestion would be to kinda-sorta follow the doc's recommendations about riding and keep the sneaky, illicit rides to short, gentle ones.

Jill

PS My doc has never said a word against motorcycling. He hasn't told me not to ride at all. Perhaps showing up at all my office visit in a skirt and heels gave him a different impression of me? Maybe you guys should try that. :)

Well, I can't really argue for / against my own pussification, however, I will offer in my defense the following:

Unlike TWN, I did not jump up and get back on the bike. The paramedics wouldn't let me. But, they said I tried.

Like Pony, I went and bought a bike very early in the recovery process. I was still walking with a cane. I had to trailer it home. (Damn, that made the pussification scale go up.)

I've just been able to ride again since the end of July. I have accumulated 4500 miles on the bike since. (Hey, why wasn't BD included in this poll?)

But I will admit my ride is affected. I feel like Steve Martin in that famous movie scene, trying to get the rhythm...

I'm working on it. It ain't over till they cover me with dirt.
