Subject: Russell Seat COG Group Buy!

All right! Between the COG forum, listserver and folks

coming in from the ST list, we have 17, enough to

arrange the buy. I will contact Russell this week and

get the info to all. Paul

Very interesting Bounce. This may be the time for me to pull the trigger. Thanks for the info.

Update

Just got off the phone with Katy from Russell. The

2005 COG Group Buy is ON!

Dates are the month of December 2005, first come,

first served.

You must have your seat into Russell with all the

forms, pictures seat pan and payment before December

31st, 2005. Keep in mind that they are closed for part

of the holidays, so I personally would get it to them

before Dec. 15th, 2005.

You must write "2005 COG GROUP BUY" in the payment

area of the order form.

Then manually mark 10% off your order WITH THE

EXCEPTION OF SHIPPING AND TAXES.

This COG Group Buy is good for all seats they work on,

regardless of model. So if you have an FJR, ST, etc.,

the discount will be valid. Ride in appointments are

also discounted, but must be arranged well in advance.

Russell’s contact info is:

Order form

https://www.day-long.com/order_01.pdf

Russell currently has enough work to keep them busy

until December 7th, so your seats would be done in the

order they arrive. Turnaround will be based on volume

of seats that come in. The word got out to the FJR and

ST boards, who will also be joining the COG group buy.

So we are looking at about 25-30 seat orders. I would

suggest getting your seat in before December 1st to

get in earlier in the build order. Heck, for some the

riding season is over as of Thanksgiving.

Russell has a two year warrantee on their seats, some

of you asked if repairs and rebuilds are part of this

group buy, unfortunately they are not. BUT I strongly

suggest that you contact Katy at Russell

1-800-432-9566 and check about warrantee or other

repairs.

You provide measurements of inseam, height, weight,

riding style, pillion usage, plus pics of you and

pillion sitting on the bike, then you send in your

stock seat base pan, with or without the seat cover

attached. Make sure you remove the mounting

brackets on the back of the seat prior to sending,

those are worth their weight in gold since you can't

buy them separately.

On your order form you will fill out stich pattern,

single or dual custom seat, seat material and credit

card info. In about 4 weeks your seat is back and you

get to ride, break it in for about 1000 miles, then

decide if it needs additional customizing.

Costs are all located at https://www.day-long.com

Neither COG nor I have any financial goals, gains, or

personal interest in Russell or this deal, besides the

fact that I personally love my seat. Took me from

multiple 500 mile days to multiple 850 mile days. Had

back surgery last year, so my daily range went down

some, but I just installed a modified Utopia driver's

backrest on my Russell and it works great. BTW - some

folks have ordered the Russell Driver's Backrest and

complained about it's appearance. Be warned. That's

why I did the Utopia backrest, which can be removed

and only shows a small mount on the seat crown. You

can check out that modification in the appropriate

folder on my website.

Once again, I do not work for, nor am I a

representative of Russell Day-Long seats. DO NOT SEND

MONEY OF ANY KIND TO ME. I am just a COG member who

negotiates group discounts when I can. You will work

directly with Katy and the nice folks over at Russell.

OK, I've been gonna do the Russell thing for months but I keep procrastinating. Why? Because 500 bones is a lot of money to pay for a seat that you've never laid an ass cheek on and I'm not quite sure about a couple of features.

So I ask for the collective wisdom of the group in deciding:

1. Leather or vinyl? Either all leather or all vinyl, the inserts don't appeal to me but the waffle butt pattern that I guess that we could call the " WC Style" does.

2. Will the Russell keep me and my cajones from sliding forward towards the toaster? This tendency is one thing that I really don't like about the stock seat.

and (most importantly)

3. I weigh about 222 lbs. Should I get the heavyweight/lard ass suspension? This is the big thing that is hard to get a feel for when just looking at the pictures.

Opinions welcome.

Cheers,

Jim

I'd have a hard time spending that kind of coin without a ride-in. We did it for our apparel, and we will for a saddle as well. Thankfully, we live in the same state as the 3 top saddle makers. I had a ride-in scheduled for Russell, and haven't heard back from them about if I could get the discount. However, Rick Mayer can do Saturdays while Russell will not, and Eve's schedule doesn't allow for midweek trips. So, it looks like my choice is being made for me.

Sounds like you need to get rid of Eve........

I'll take her.

:p

TALK with them during the build process. TELL them what you need when riding (along with the other items they ask for). Explain to them what doesn't work with your current seat. It's custom built based on your explanations and measurements.

:agent: You have got to be kidding I will be getting my seat hopefully tomorrow the 11th. Wonder if I can still get the 10% discount ? Guess its worth a try.

Story of my life &*#

Thanks, Dan in Yucaipa Ca. :bleh:

I would like a real hardcore rider who has a Russell (Warchild? You listening?) jump in this thread and really thrash out some details.

Break in period? Preferred surface material/pattern. That kind of stuff.

If I had to choose right here, right now, I'd probably pick the "Warchild", simply because an IronButt demi-god has this model.

My stock seat, cut down by the previous owner, is good for about 90 minutes before I start squirming, but some of that is knee discomfort as well as butt discomfort. A quick water/pee stop is enough to give me another 90 minutes or so.

Is the Russell really "all that and more?"

I'm not a "hard-core" rider like W.C. or Bounce, but I love my Russell.

Rode from Sacto to Shasta City (Mountain Rte on Hwy 89)...sore butt.

Rode home down I-5, by Woodland, most of the "sore" spots didn't hurt anymore and there were no "new" sore spots.

I have leather (breathes better, I live in the Central Valley of CA. 100+ summer days), and not the pattern W.C. has. I wanted less "thread exposure" in the rain. But, you can get their rain cover, so that's really a none issue. I really didn't want mine to be like anyone else's famous seat! ;)

I opted for the extra spring. My weight fluctuates, and at the heaviest runs 250+. I don't think it is necessary, but ask them and follow their guidelines. I think they recommend it for 250 lbs.+.

Russell says 1000 miles. I noticed a vast improvement within500-600 miles. One of 3 things I harvested off the totalled '04 was the Russell seat.

Is the russell all that and more? For me, yup! Maybe not for everyone, but look at the response and those who are thinking about it. On the trip to WFO-4 we did 2500 miles in 5 days. 2 of those days were 150 miles or so on local roads. We were in the saddle every day, and I think the last day over 600 miles. I could have kept going. Now I have to remind myself to stop every 90 miles or so for other riders...I could keep going.

No more "butt burn" or "monkey butt". I'd do it again, no questions.

Break in period?  Preferred surface material/pattern.
IMO: give it at least 1000 miles (per Russell) before asking them to change anything. I personally like the leather over either the vinyl or velour.

Is the Russell really "all that and more?"
I give this an unqualified: YES.

Hey admins! Can we pin this topic so that it doesn't get lost? Group buys on Russells don't happen every day. The last one was a year ago.

Thanks in advance.

I'm in! They're going to make me a custom backrest to fit on the front of a Tanji fuel cell. YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
