Remove panels A & D to access fuses. These are shown on page 6-8 in the owners manual. Page(s) 6-30 thru 6-32 detail fuse locations. Are these the fairing pieces you're referring to?

There's 3 fuse locations on the Gen1. You only have to remove the black plastic trim panels to access all 3, not the front (painted) fairing section. (Note: they are identified clockwise from the left rear as A B C and D, respectively.)

The main fuse is a bit awkward, forward of the battery near the base of the right hand mirror stalk. Remove panels C and D for access. The fuel injection fuse (and a spare) is located just behind the battery. Only panel D has to come off to get that one. (Those are also common places for a PO to tuck an inline fuse for an aftermarket accessory.)

The rest of the fuses are under the left side rear panel (Panel A), where the 4-way flasher switch lives. Only that one panel has to come off to get at those. Still a PITA though -- removing Panel A includes removing the two black plastic "quick fasteners" from down between the black plastic panel and the left fork tube with a Philips screwdriver. Always fun on a dark rainy night with cold, stiff fingers.

Add a flashlight and shorty Phillips to your tool kit, beside the roll of electrical tape and the zip ties. Also a couple of spare fasteners because they are equally fun to find lying on wet, black pavement where you dropped them trying to get them reinstalled while holding the flashlight between your teeth.

Alternatively, throw the panel(s) into your luggage and worry about re-installation in the morning.
