Would you mind showing a few pics! I've got a few Q's, i hope you don't mind:

-How did you get the recall plate for the OEM box, I've bought mine of Ebay,

-Can I just walk up my dealer and request it?

-What do you think makes those stress cracks? To much load or plain structural integrity?

If you have stress cracks go back to your dealer and they will replace it for you there is a tsb on it i had the same problem and they reolaced it for me.
 
Since you want color-keyed and reasonable but useful size, I'd recommend a Givi 46, or a Coocase. Shorter, cheaper and more useful than the OEM top box, IMHO. I have the OEM with the recall plate, it's never been abused, and it has stress-cracked at the front and the bottom..... ruined. I have been meaning to post up some pics.... soon. The aftermarket boxes are more robust.
Mine also cracked. The oem trunk but I made a repair to it and it seemed to hold up well after that. Here are a couple pics of my repair job. I just went to the hardware store bought some thin metal pop riveted it to the case in the crack areas and then painted it. It worked great for me. Then I ended up getting yamaha to warranty my box and got a brand new one. I don't over load it now. I'm sure that is why mine cracked it was over loaded and my wife leans against it. Someone here on this forum bought my old repaired one.

I think mine is beyond repair.... will work on posting up some pics as I dissect it. I don't think I really overloaded it nor was it leaned on much, but some rough roads didn't help.

 
I dunno Erik, but it seems to me that it would be pretty hard to overload an OEM top box considering how small the inside volume actually is. OTOH. I do overload my Givi V46 when on 2-up tours, to the point where it is often hard to close the lid successfully, and that box is an honest to god 46 liters inside. Having the steel rack supporting it gives me a little more confidence that I won't crack the subframe of the bike. But I do know I'm playing with fire there.

As for use as a back rest, that is the only time I will use mine (when 2-up). Otherwise I have no problem fitting whatever I need into the side cases. Maybe if I was going on a week long vacation one-up I'd still use the trunk. Not sure because the long rides we always do together.

Like the OP I hate the looks of any top box, but when riding with the missus she insists on having a backrest as it makes her feel much more secure. And I find the Givi V46 with the color matched lid to be the least offensive of the bunch. Here's a picture of the bike on tour in Cape Bretton, Nova Scotia last year (the Bagster tank cover and tank bag have since been replaced with a different setup)

A Corbin smuggler is slick, but very expensive and doesn't really store much. You could put more into any decent size tank bag and it won't cost nearly as much.

Obviously, as with anything as subjective as this, YMMV.

 
Can someone post a pic of an installed mounting plate, from the top, and using the Yamaha supplied bolts? TIA.

Thank you sir, we tried to get our garage as neat as possible, only the best for the toys. We grew tired of the cement floor, so we bought this garage floor, laid it out nicely and it's just easier to keep it clean.

This is one of the times I was talking about Fred. I think I might have had the OEM trunk a little full on this trip along with my wife leaning against it at times. I'm not sure about the weight of all this stuff. Not sure how much the OEM trunk can take. But I don't have to worry about overloading it any more since my wife and I only go camping with our RV now.

 
Yeah, that looks way over loaded!! :lol: I seem to recall the rear rack's capacity is like 12 lbs?

I was mostly being facetious about it and making fun of the OEM trunks smaller size. But you can overload anything if you stuff heavy enough stuff in there. The sleeping bags in the lid are OK, but the Tent and hatchet in the bottom are higher weight density stuff better off carried down low or on a seat bag. I honestly do not know how folks can 2-up camp. I have a hard enough time packing all our stuff up for a week long motel-camping trip. ;)

 
Well my wife and I only did it a few times. Now we do luxury camping with our RV. Small Starcraft camper. I'm the only one that does FJR camping now.

Thanks, Steve, I posted my top box failure. Will hold off on further dissection until I can see my local dealer... it is 5 years old, not liking my chances.

I don't know why you guys think that the aftermarket trunks can't take the load... or even the rear sub frame... :lol:

Mine is an 06 and the yamaha dealer here in Ottawa replaced it for me this spring. There is a TSB on it i found it on google.

 
Just checked my OEM top box and I have a couple of cracks going on. :angry: The bike has 17,000 KM on it and the top box is off most of the time seeing that I only use the thing as a backrest for the kids or the wife when they are on the bike. This is obviously a bad design or bad materials being used. No other explanations. if it was abuse or a hit etc... I am man enough to take my responsibilities, but to have this happen just like that is wrong, especially for a part that costs like $800 (and more with all the add-ons like backrest and mounting bracket).

I will do a search to see if there is some kind of recourse here with Yamaha or otherwise... pics to follow soon of the cracks.

 
hi all!

I know it's an old thread but did anyone here fitted the original topbox (with original mounting plate) on the Givi, Shad or Kappa mount? is it possible to adapt the original topcase mounting plate to the aftermarket mount/handle?
The thing is that my 2006 plastic handle/mount is completely broken under the seat so I was thinking that instead of buying another expensive original plastic (or original aluminum one which is even more expensive), to try to adapt it on Givi one.

I don't see that working, the mounts are completely different. You'd have to make an adapter plate with givi mount on one side and Yamaha mount on the other.
 
Yes, for sure there will be some adaptations ongoing. I was just wondering if someone did it already and can share some tips/pictures.
On facebook forum there are some guys who confirmed they did it in the past but don't have pictures available now. Will see what can be done.
Just to explain why I am looking for this: simple because in order to get a second hand passenger handle here, in Eastern Europe where I am located is around 220 euros - for the same money I can buy a metallic Givi handle + givi plate + a used Givi topbox.
But ideally I would like to keep at least the original Yamaha topbox for the clean view. Thats why I want to adapt it to the Givi/Kappa/Shad metallic part.
 
The black Yamaha carrier plate is ABA-2D261-30-10 and by now, I think you'll do well to find one but it would be by far the easiest to adapt onto a third-party frame.

The top case recall kit is 5JW-PLATE-KT-00 and includes the black plate mentioned above, along with a stainless reinforcing plate for the underside of the top case and the relevant fitting hardware.

The metal rack/carrier that everyone is so fond of is 1-MC-248-D0-00 and tends to be very expensive. It only fits Gen. 2 onwards unless you want to engage in major 'interference'!

Both 39 and 50-litre Yamaha cases fit ANY Yamaha FJR carrier, any age.
