    saddle bag lock friendly reminder

Maybe it is better that the children who assemble the new bikes don't use locktite on the little screws. That loctite stuff can do a number on plastics. My best guess is, if the child had a container of loctite sitting there, and dipped that tiny screw into it, he'd use WAY WAY too much, and...

    Front wheel position

Thanks, Luis. It is good to know the T30 mounts easily with the No Mar. I've been looking at that T30 rear and that stiff sidewall and thinking it was gonna be me or the tire. You've encouraged me!

    noise from front tire

Yeah, my 2014 is just now passing 5k miles. The original BT023s have been noisy since Day One. On that day, I rode without earplugs, and noticed the noise immediately. It surprised me, and made me think there was some other source of the noise, because I'm used to tires being real quiet when...

What if I never do the valve adjustment?

I wish the job was as easy as on my 71 BMW R60/5, long ago lost in a fire. I made the tappets nice and quiet by adjusting the valves with the engine piping hot. Near zero clearance hot. Two valves per cyl. Airheads stuck right out in the wind. Could do the whole job start to finish wearing...

Learning the quirks - Brake handle lever and switch

Oh, ok. I've had my 14A for almost two months, and was having a lot of trouble getting my usual smooth, pre-load the shifter and partially pull in the clutch type of shift going. I'd noticed the friction zone was much closer to the grip than most bikes I've ridden, and for some reason I didn't...

Learning the quirks - Brake handle lever and switch

If you've got an adjuster knob on your lever, make sure it is at position #1. This will move the friction zone out away from the handgrip the maximum possible, and probably completely solve your grainy shifts.

Pain is no Gain when bike is suffering!

So, was it the pads binding in the caliper that caused the seizing? If so, was this due to not cleaning the caliper?

    Thoughts on selling

I got my 2014 AE in mid-June, and this is the first FJR I've spent any real time on, having only test-ridden a few others. I came from a 2007 Venture that I put 54k miles on. The Venture, for me, is a vastly less "athletic" ride than the FJR. Feet forward on footboards, not tucked up under...

    26,000 mile Valve Adjustment

Let me add something here about Yamaha valves. I had a 97 Royal Star. At near 26k miles I did my valve clearance check according to the schedule. I found all 16 valves near the close end of the spec but within spec, but the outboard #1 exhaust valve had so little clearance I couldn't get my...

    Spontaneous Tire fix

Plugging with Stop 'n Go can be a real PITA, so I like the string things as backup. I was plugging a hole in my 97 Royal Star rear, and the hole was too big to completely seal with the plug. I needed to get going, so I tried pushing another plug into the hole, thinking that it wouldn't work...

    Advice on Possible FJR Purchase

I've used many different types of bikes for basic transportation all of my driving-riding life. Based on my experience, I tend to agree with those who say the FJR is not the best bike for bump-and-grind traffic at low speed. But I don't think it has as much to do with bike weight as with the...

    Spontaneous Tire fix

I used the plugs in bias ply tires many times, and would run the plugged tire to end of life, and never really had much problem. Maybe would have to re-plug after a few thousand miles. With belted radials, I've had the plugs come out, looking like they'd been cut off. After only a hundred...

    Final drive oil change question

I don't recall ever seeing anything on my drain plug that I could discern individual particles. To me it looks more like mud. When you say you found some "slippage around the top plug" does that mean the bolt was loose? Or that you had some seepage of oil from there?

Tire Age - Bridgestone Recent Rebate Offer

Same here on a set of T30 I just received from probably the same place as the OP. Good price, free shipping, two day delivery. Mine are both dated the same way. One is two years old, the other about 18 months. I don't worry too much about them being a few years old. Once they go on the bike...

Few Gen III observations, comments, and questions

Thanks for the info on the ABS-like shudder in the front brake lever as the bike is coming to a halt. I had checked through the owner's manual and mis-read something there about a test mode that requires a mechanic special tool to enable, which made me suspect it had been enabled in my bike for...

Few Gen III observations, comments, and questions

I've just passed 2k miles on my 2014, which I bought "new" on 12 June. I've got to agree with the OP about the linking of the brakes. Now, I'm getting accustomed to using mainly the pedal in routine braking. All these years of ignoring the pedal, now I'm having to change my habit. No...

Split: Why FJR Steering Head Bearing Re-Torque?

Yes. On page 4-94 of my brand-new official Yamaha FJR1300A service manual, it shows the 85 ft-lb (115 Nm) spec for the steering head nut.

    Test Ride FJR Tomorrow

Test rides are all but useless to me. I've never bought a new bike that I could say my first ride, the demo ride, showed me anything about the bike whatever. At the demo moment, I'm just trying to figure out where the pedals are, and what the switches do. It takes weeks and hundreds, maybe...

    2015 Factory Service Manual

I just got mine from Yamaha. I ordered it online on the 27th June and received the book yesterday, 6 July. I didn't notice any particular glitchiness with the site. Maybe I'm so used to the Yamaha Way that I don't notice it anymore. I also use some Yamaha keyboards, the manuals for them are...

Split: Why FJR Steering Head Bearing Re-Torque?

Many bikes I've bought new needed head bearings re-torqued after a few miles. My 2014 FJR. I got it home with 18 miles on the clock and started my usual process of going over the bike checking fasteners. First check, steering head nut. Spec is 85 lb/ft. Mine was about 50 lb/ft. With only...
