Hey folks, as most of my visitors are from this site, thought I'd let you know that I just put up another installment on the blog. Taking more time than I originally anticipated. www.mccaa.com Thanks! Steve

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Hey, folks thanks again for so many kind words. If you have not been following along I recommend tuning in tomorrow evening (after 5 PM pacific) when I tell the story of Jim Owen's (Winner '09) arrival at the group photo bonus on leg 1. BTW, about 30% of the readers of my blog come from this...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Hey folks, Steve McCaa here. Thanks for the kind words on the blog. I encourage anyone considering the rally to take a read. I'll be sprinkling my reports with words of wisdom (or folly, you decide) for anyone considering the ride. I do apologize for the length, I try to keep the daily posts to...

Looking for alternative to the Iron Butt

There are also rumors of the Butt Lite rally by Team Strange and the SPANK rally by George Zelenz. Both of these have been around 7 days in prior years. Rumors on the Butt Lite rally are that the theme will be "Unplugged," evoking a simpler time before GPS devices...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Ok see I read this and said "hey sounds like a good idea to me, what's the big deal?" Then i saw your screen name... and then checked you profile. Now the full weight of "I shaved my head" sinks in... The sacrifices necessary to compete in the IBR! Congrats on a great ride and top 20 finish...

So you want to be an IBR rider...

I posted this to the LDriders mail list but I thought it germian to the discussion here so I'm reposting it: So much of what we do as riders is risk assessment. This also carries through to other parts of our lives. What I find so fascinating is how many people think they are good at risk...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

All I can say is that you have more faith in humanity than I do. I have encountered way too many stupid people in my time. Remember half of all people are below average. Add stupid, fatigue and motorcycle and death can result. It doesn't even take stupidity, just an inability to access your...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

I am referring to the fact that she feels he will die if he attempts this. If he does do an IBA ride he will either live or die. If he lives he proves her fears unfounded. If he dies her fears were well grounded. To me that is black and white. (I guess an argument could be made for permanent...

So you want to be an IBR rider...

I will do either a Canadian CC next year or hoping they run the Butt Lite again. I was thinking of doing a CC50, but after the GLC I realize that would be a little to dull. The first half of the GLC was beautiful. Nice two lane highways and great scenery. The last half was I90, followed by some...

So you want to be an IBR rider...

After doing my GLC ride I would agree. These are best done as solo endeavors. On my GLC I was very worried at some points about my riding companion. He was more fatigued than I. At fuel stops you always stay stopped for the longest persons stop. Most of the time he was faster than me, but then...

So you want to be an IBR rider...

If you think this is about helmets you are sorely mistaken. I don't know about Davo or his incident. I was not there. My heart goes out to his family. Joe's helmet did protect him. It had a minor scrape. but he had no face damage. A full face helmet would have done nothing to protect Joe's...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Happy, please go and read my post "So you want to be an IBR rider...". I don't know you or your background. You may be god's gift to long distance riding or just your average guy. Read my post and then think about what your friend is telling you. There are only two possibilities; you are right...

So you want to be an IBR rider...

It had been 11 years since I owned a bike. The last thing I did in 1998 was to ride my bike in the Minnesota 1000. I rode a 1000+ miles in that rally and managed to finish 10th in my class. It was a walk off grand slam for me. My wife was pregnant and said "I think you should ride less..." I...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Some news from various sources: Kirt Dix is out. Engine self destructed in Butte Montana. He's hoping to rent a car to get to the finish dinner. Rumor is that several of the riders in Canada have run into road construction. Their finishing is in doubt... Not sure how reliable this rumor is as...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

News from the LDRiders mail list: Wendy called around 1:00am (EST) to let me know she managed to get her rear tire replaced in Saskatoon and she was heading out for more Boni. The local Yamaha dealer, Pro line Sports had set aside a tire for her and waited around a little while but they...

    IBR Failures

Wow! I've never seen that. I just read a lot of ride reports on ADVrider that feature headlines like: "How I spent my trip fixing my final drive assembly with jbweld and a rock." My favorite pic is this one: Which may have been a contributing factor in my lube break down theory...

    IBR Failures

Ah well... as you see from my profile I do not own an FJR... and my bike is 2.3L for 650cc, with no oil cooler. Even that said the truck does not use the engine oil to lubricate the transmission. And it red lines at 1800 rpm. So there are a few differences.
