Not rough idle....now rough accel and sputtering

I think you have one or more plugs fouled! Change em!

Headlights not turning on until bike starts (2003)

Don't wash it, just ride the damn thing and you won't "discover" these outstading features of our bike!!! LOL!

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

Well it would be very easy to tell by Plastigauge the clearances.

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

Nope, your 100% right on the compression issues and perhaps that was the area of the water leak into the oil! Just a head gasket problem? I don't know. Maybe a crack due to over heating? Could be, but some easy tests might have indicated that! Well, what is done is done as they say!!

Rotella T6 causing clutch drag and hard shifting?

Rotella T6 with STP works for me!

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

The more I look at those bearing pics and the 'white milk slurry' in the sump and oil pump, the more convinced I am that MADDAD has the right theme with what went wrong with this engine. Depending upon what the rod bearing clearance measurements turn out to be, I think it is very possible that...

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

That sounds very plausible! It's clear that the thing has been abused and misused. Surprise it lasted as long as it did and appears to be , in general, in as good shape.

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

Also, if you don't have a Plastigauge kit, take some of the extra $ donated and purchase one for this Forum project!

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

Yes, what I was suggesting was what Ion mentioned using Plastigage to get the clearance between the crank journal and the rod bearing shell and then using the micrometer measure the crank journal diameter and compare to the other crank journals (#1, 2 and 4). If you could feel play in the #3...

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

By the way, EXCELLENT job of tear down and documenting the FJR engine internals. Good on ya!

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

I am REALLY surprised by what you found with the #3 rod bearing! The mechanic says that he was able to 'measure or feel' some play using a rod thru the spark plug hole. Seems odd that it was that prominent with a rod bearing that appears from the photos to have so little wear! It would be nice...

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

Just out of curiosity you might check if the metal particles in the filter are magnetic (like iron or steel). Bearing material usually isn't magnetic (I think?) and of course the case is aluminum and would'nt be either. Just curious!

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

You might try applying some heat to the stubborn bolt to help soften any loctite that may have been used previously.

    What happened to Isabella's Engine?

Wonder how the mechanic determined this motor had a bad #3 rod bearing without splitting the case and getting to the lower end?

    KC Region - Lowering Bike

Well lets see, I thought the angle of the swing arm to the frame determines the force exerted on the shock spring. As this angle changes so does the the force imparted to the spring and therefore the effective spring rate. I may be smoking some thing but maybe better go back to my geometry...

    KC Region - Lowering Bike

I recently lowered my 05' using Soupys adjustable links and adjustable side stand. I lowered the front and rear approx. 1" and cannot detect any noticible difference in handling. The ground clearance of course is less but just remember that and be careful. One other item to also consider is...

FJR with 39.4 in. ground clearance?

It must be true, it's in print!!

    Shorai battery

Gary, I would try that however we are just out the door on our way to the Sunshine State (Bradenton/Sarasota area). I will see if I can get my neighbor to sneek into my garrage and give it a try. Will post results if he is willing to disconnect the charger and let it sit for a day in the cold.
