FJR Has Gotten Too Heavy. What To Buy?

Versys 1000 gets my vote also. I purchases a very low miles 2015 last summer and have added Audiovox cruise, heated grips, crash bars, bigger windshield, and new seat. The 2019 Versys comes with cruise and heated grips but is priced much higher. It's a little lighter than my Gen 1 FJR and...

    Audiovox or Rostra

Dan, I would go with the Audiovox. I just installed one on my 2015 Versys 1000 without any issues. They always seem to work if installed properly and with the correct switch settings. I used magnets on the rear rotor bolts for the speed sensing input but it can also be configured with a...

    Engine Didn't Grenade/Something Happened/And Final Report

Assuming that your excessive clearance is caused by carbon, wouldn't it be wiser NOT to reshim the valves back into "spec"? If you find a way to "decarbon" the valves after you get it running again, your valve clearances will become too tight. The only down side I can see (to leaving them a...

    Gen 1 Missing and Stumbling

Jasper, I'm glad your bike is now running properly but I disagree with your conclusion that problem was tight valve(s). .11 mm is slightly over .004 inch. That is out of spec but would not cause the problems you originally described. My "guess" is that one or both cams were a tooth off and...

    Which Cruise Control?

I've installed 6 or 7 cruise controls over the last 20 years. All were Audiovox CCS-100's except the last one done a year ago on my Gen1 FJR (McCruise). The other bikes were ST1100's (3 or 4 times), VStrom 650, and KLR650. In my opinion the CCS-100 installations were easier than the McCruise...

    Enlarged Fifth Gear ?

I swapped the Royal Star Venture ring and pinion gears into a spare FJR pumpkin a few weeks ago and I am happy with the results. My FJR is a Gen1 and I used to try to find a higher (6th) gear often. Now my 5th gear is a "true" overdrive and I no longer try. I totally agree that it is not...

    Final Drive Re-shim/Tightening Backlash—Easy

Parts arrived last Friday, I put the final drive together yesterday with new o-rings and new pinion nut. Today I installed the final drive and put rear wheel back on. I took it out for a short 40 Mile test drive, mostly city streets and a few back roads. A lot of starts and stops and a few...

    Final Drive Re-shim/Tightening Backlash—Easy

I thought I should update this post and bump it to the top. The pinion bearings came off the pinion shafts easily and the shims were swapped from the 9 tooth FJR gear to the 10 tooth RSV gear. Two things to note are: 1. The pinion assembly doesn't come out or go into the F-D as easily as some...

    Final Drive Re-shim/Tightening Backlash—Easy

Thanks for that info Steve! It's my first time to open up the FJR pumpkin so all advice is appreciated. Especially the part about not trying to eliminate too much backlash. I did swap gears in a ST1100 about a decade ago and that one seemed a little easier to do. I was putting GL1500 gears...

    Final Drive Re-shim/Tightening Backlash—Easy

I spent the day playing with final drive(s) and remembered this post. I disassembled 2005 FJR and a 2008 RSV final drives. I'm planning to put the RSV gears into the FJR pumpkin so I can have an overdrive gear in my 2004 FJR. (10:33 vs 9:33 ratios) Both of the final drive ring gear shims...

    Itsy Bitsy Spider?

I don't think a ground problem would cause the brake light to be on. Check the switch on the brake peddle. They are known to stick. Easy fix.
