    EOM 2012

I have 20-days of use-or-lose vacation this year. Wonder if I should take all of September off??? :)

    Relay Arm Service

Ruh roh Fred! :( Yep, that waxy/plastic looking stuff is actually BOTH the needles separator and lubrication. They are designed to occupy just enough space to keep the needles from contacting each other and keep them contacting only the outer race and inner sleeve surfaces. If you remove ALL...

    Bikey no idle....STILL

Let sleeping dogs lie Richard. Make sure you have the PAIR system capped to help keep that new throttle body clean, and just move on. I'm telling you guys, allowing the Gen-II cam chain to accidentally droop and wind up one tooth off is WAY easier than you think. It doesn't actually skip a...

    Bikey no idle....STILL

Richard, I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier. The moment I read the first sentence I knew your bike had jumped one tooth. It will WFO like a mutha and runs like a scalded dog above 4,000 RPM. But it won't idle, no way, no how. Been there done that, and it's a lot easier to do than people...

    flywheel removal

I can normally loosen the rotor bolt using a good air impact without putting anything in gear and risking damage. I use the in-gear hand method and torque wrench on the re-assembly. A purchased puller is a must in my book. Too much at risk.

    Relay Arm Service

You probably have already, but make sure you order/replace the seals. New seals are everything and cheap! You'd be shocked at how long the bearings and sleeves will last once you re-pack them with good waterproof grease and fresh seals. Be very careful about greasing/packing the bearings. The...

    EOM 2012

I hope to periodically add more useless tidbits of information. Something fairly unique and definitely worth mentioning about the HendersonvilleNC area... The location provides many good choices at a variety of elevations ranging from 1,500'-6,000' ASL. If the weather is bad up high, you can...

    Relay Arm Service

I've seen them much worse. But if you have the whole damn thing apart and are trying to tighten up the suspension, then yes, it needs replacing. Actually you will find that most of the play comes from those bushing sleeves rather than the bearings. The bearing needles are much harder surfaces...

Cold Start Fast Idle Follow Up with resolution

Nope! I consider it pointless to measure valve clearances on an FJR that has not been recently de-carboned, especially one that has run 26,000 miles since the last valve check. Typically you will find at least one exhaust valve that gives inconsistent measurements due to carbon buildup.

Cold Start Fast Idle Follow Up with resolution

Damn it makes you feel old when somebody sorta, kinda, somewhat remembers you. :) SeaFoam makes a cloud of grayish-blue smoke that will block the sunlight from your neighborhood. But it sure works!!!

Cold Start Fast Idle Follow Up with resolution

I was typing more when you replied. :) Your 226k miles started a long time ago. USA Pump Gas has gone exponentially to crap in the past 2-3 years. Carburetor engines are doomed, and FI engines without O2 sensors both upstream and downstream of a catalytic converter aren't doing much better. :(

Cold Start Fast Idle Follow Up with resolution

My semi-annual maintenance includes a complete SeaFoam treatment. Carbon buildup is an ever-increasing problem with FJRs (and similar engines) using today's pump gas formulas. SeaFoam is simple to do. I've demonstrated this method at several Tech meets. Tell the neighbors in advance that your...

    Öhlins Moto/Supercross race hauler

Most of my trophies were won while pulling an 8' trailer with a $39 umbrella for pop-up shade. Boy, do I feel outclassed!!! :D Nice rig Gary. Bound to attract some impressive track decorations.

You cannot press the middle bearings through the casting. They must be pulled outward. I have to use a Motion Pro blind bearing puller.

What is the problem with manufacturers?

Before you all get too far along... :D The Sena SMH10 headset is a nice unit IMHO. But if you try reaching the full level of audio integration offered by the current TOL wired units like Autocomm and Starcom, you must also use the new Sena SR10 hub unit which is MONO only. Hard to believe...

    EOM 2012

Uhhh... NO!!!... You must now graduate "conditioning" before becoming a resident of the South. We teach you basic chemistry like dissolving sugar in hot water instead of cold, how to properly address a woman as Ma'am, and how to differentiate between a pecan and a pee-can, despite both being...

    New PIAA Slimline Sports Horn

    Instrument Cluster for Sale

Won't work. 2008 is Gen-III, 2006 is Gen-II. ECU interface to the instrument cluster changed between 2007 and 2008 models. Not compatible. You'll have to do like the rest of us and paint yours satin black. :D

Olympia Airglide Mesh Jacket and Pants

I did a stator and regulator/rectifier upgrade on Grumpy's Gen-I that worked extremely well. It costs about $500 in parts to do everything 1st class, but the end result produced a charging system that rivals any Gen-II. Traveling two-up presents special challenges that many do not understand...

Olympia Airglide Mesh Jacket and Pants

24-F, 0% precip, 90 errrr... 70 mph, 2.0 hour legs, is my limit for Olympia AirGlide mesh with Gerbings liner and gloves. That includes a moisture-wicking hunter's style undergarments, along with a long sleeve medium-weight shirt under the liner. Some type of lightweight sweat pants or...
