Dead FJR - no starter engage/spin

Come on guys! The fuel pump and the injectors are fed from the same power relay. You know if the engine is cranking the injectors must be powered, otherwise the engine couldn't start -- no fuel. If the injectors are powered, the fuel pump is powered and running too.

Dead FJR - no starter engage/spin

"Pushing starter button dims instrumentation normally" From your first post. This is an indication that a motor is started when you press the starter pushbutton. Don't know if it's just the fuel pump or also the starter motor.

Dead FJR - no starter engage/spin

"I agree it's not being monitored by the 'system' BUT it is controlled by a pressure switch in the pump assembly.........." I'm skeptical that there's an electrical switch inside the fuel pump assembly which can switch the motor off. I haven't seen such a switch shown on any wiring schematic...

Dead FJR - no starter engage/spin

"The fuel pump should come on and run for a couple of seconds at ignition key on (if kill switch is in run position), and then stops running as soon as the pressure in the fuel rail is satisfied. It will not come on again until the fuel pressure drops below the pressure switch set point." I'm...

    Getting the Cam Timing Right

You folks are making something easy into something not so easy. Looking at the bottom two photos provides the answer. You can see the arrow on each of the camshaft caps. On the end of each cap you can see a small vertical nib protruding out at the point of the arrow. Get a small straight...

    Ambiant tempurature display?

The displayed air temperature on my Honda car can be easily calibrated. The procedure is described in the Owner's Manual. It can be adjusted up to +/- 5 degF. The programmable thermostat I use in my home also allows for calibration of the displayed temperature.

    missing rear axle pinch bolt

Yes, I've seen those multi-tools. If I had some red threadlocker I'd make a simple axle tool with a short 10 mm D bolt and a nut or two. The head on a standard 10 mm bolt is 14 mm. Same for a nut. Get a short hex head bolt and thread a nut onto it with a bit of red threadlocker. You have a...

Anyone own a Gen II or Gen III Versys 650?

Supposedly the newest redesign 2015+ has added additional rubber engine and handlebar mountings which have dramatically reduced vibration felt by the rider. I'm thinking about getting one too. The 2017 has added a gear position indicator to the instrument panel. It was a cheesy add-on feature...

    missing rear axle pinch bolt

There's a sheet metal spark plug? wrench in my FJR tool pouch which fits inside the hex socket on the axle. I use this wrench to hold the axle as I tighten the axle nut. I tighten the pinch bolt after doing everything else. Not sure the pinch bolt offers much value anyway. I wish I had a 14...

    Radiator Cap on Expansion Tank

Just got a new Honda Civic and I noticed that the coolant pressure cap is on the plastic expansion tank rather than the radiator. There is no removable cap on the radiator. A small hose just below the cap can dump excess coolant onto the ground. This scheme is new to me. There must be a...

    Broken Penske Clevis.

Maybe should use a variation of one of these? https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/countyline-red-head-hitch-pin-grade-5-4-in-usable-pin-length?cm_vc=-10005

    Coolant Leak

Is your engine running too lean since the throttle body change? Supposedly if it runs too lean it runs too hot. Can the oxygen sensor have any effect while idling? Maybe you have excess heat that the fans can't overcome when sitting still? Maybe something's out of whack with one of the fuel...

    Coolant Leak

50/50 coolant boils at 223 degF at atmospheric pressure. The fans should start at 221 degF. With the increased pressure from the radiator cap this coolant boils at approximately 265 degF. So if you're seeing temps above 223 the cap is pressurizing the system to some extent. On my '04 the...

    Charging System Failure Modes

The current between the R/R and battery should typically be small. On my non-abs '04 the only current in that loop is the battery charging current (< 2 amps) and the fuel pump & injectors (7+ amps). Of course if you connect a bunch of accessory loads to the battery terminals that current...

    Charging System Failure Modes

One thing you can obviously do when the fans switch on is to note the voltage at idle and then rev the engine to 3K or so and see how much the voltage increases. At some rpm, if the charging system is working correctly, the voltage will stabilize at its nominal regulated value of 14.0 volts...

    Battery Terminal Bolts

My battery connections get slightly loose over time. Since I don't have wrench access to the rectangular nut down below, all the tightening torque is absorbed by the flimsy sheet metal battery terminal. I'd like to have bolts which I could wrench on both ends, protecting the terminal from the...

    My Spider Bite Story

I'm amazed that Yamaha hasn't been hammered for this absurd problem. If they built cars and did this crap they'd be mercilessly attacked by the media. Low volume recreation products don't move the needle it seems. Nobody of importance is paying any attention.

    Gen 3 ABS System

Does anyone know if the newest ABS system periodically cycles the pump, valves, etc. to circulate fluid throughout the hydraulic unit? Apparently the Gen 1 system didn't routinely cycle the hydraulic unit. Don't know if the Gen 2 did or not? I assume the Gen 3 system may be approaching the...

    AE Shift Actuator Bracket failure

Looking at a drawing of the shift rod in the service manual it appears to be spring-loaded with a dampener. I assumed that the rod would shorten if it met a lot of resistance when attempting a shift. Shifting while motionless is verboten.

    AE Shift Actuator Bracket failure

That bracket fails after the 25th shift when you're sitting still. Just kidding!! I've wondered how this system reacts to motionless shifts. Obviously it's something to be avoided. When the actuator bangs in and the gear dogs don't mesh what gives?
