    helicoiling

Agreed: machine shops are the experts at solving these kinds of problems -- it's, almost, their stock in trade. A Helicoil is an excellent thread repair device -- especially, where it may be an only one-time, or infrequent, use. They're typically not much longer in length than the diameter of...

    rainsuit vs separate pants/jacket

I'm with the Chief on that -- The money I spent on 'good enuff ' rain suits -- over and over -- only to, still, get wet... :o I finally broke down and bought a good one: a Rukka (from Finland) and it was excellent. I used it for years and finally gave it to my dad -- he kept...

    Cheyenne to Salt Lake

Your intended route is a good one. I offer 2 options (both differing in the beginning): Colo. 14 from Ft. Collins up Poudre Cyn. is a great ride and then on to Steamboat (misses the Rocky Mtn. N.P. crowds). Cheyenne to Laramie on the old Lincoln Hwy. (WY 210) and then WY 130 thru Centennial...

    "Test" riders

Many m/c dealers (tho, not all by any means) offer test rides (car dealers do it all-the-time). A couple weeks ago I test drove a new FIAT 500 -- the sales-guy asked for my d/l, took it inside (I think he made a copy?), handed it back and then asked for proof of ins. (cab card) which he kept...

Time to raise the rear a bit more

Hmmm..., can you explain how that is? Or, is there (do you know of...) a link showing the geometry and force vectors of that? On the old-days (before Kenny Roberts, Barry Sheene, etc.) road racers rarely, if ever, 'hung-off' -- they rode sitting on the saddle and leaned over pretty-far on...

    Going to the Dark Side

There's profundity in there -- somewhere...?

Steep hill, low gas engine dies

One of the exact symptoms when I had a bad TPS. Easily checked with DIAG screen. Good luck.

    Valve adjustment

IF you must replace the timing chain due to wear? -- then you must replace the sprockets, too. As the chain's pitch lengthens due to wear -- the sprockets' teeth wear to accommodate the different chain pitch. If you install a new chain on worn sprockets -- the chain's pitch soon lengthens to...

    KTM; advice on buying

4 (four) oil filters...? :o

Crashed Mon, May 2 in Brea, CA

In some states there's a law against letting someone ride your bike without (them having) a motorcycle endorsement. (lending credence to owner responsibility) Years ago I went on an, invitation only, group ride including many unfamiliar riders -- but, of course, all known to the host. At the...

Four valves at low end of clearance spec. Button her up or adjust?

The intake side is also the side less benefitted by valve cooling due to 'time on seat' -- being bathed in fresh, cool, intake mixture.

    New seat

Hard to believe motorcyclists ever toured anywhere before the days of $500 ~ $800 custom seats...! How'd they do it...? :o

Your opinion m/c crash and insurance

If Jeff is making payments on the KTM 990 SM -- he has collision coverage...right? Re the deductible: I was involved in an intersection altercation a long time ago (non-m/c) and the other guy was pretty shady about Ins., etc. Long story short: I got nowhere and, eventually, my Ins. paid all...

    Anybody ever remove

Yes, but not an FJR. There's (on bikes I've seen) a hose that goes, eventually, to the engine's intake to suck-up the fumes. That vacuum source, usually, needs to be blocked/plugged. You'll probably get a definitive answer, soon.

Four valves at low end of clearance spec. Button her up or adjust?

Objection, Your Honor -- speculative... :) OTOH, one could claim that adusting toward the greater clearance end of the clearance specification may allow the valves more time on their respective seats -- offering precious time to shed heat into the head and cooling oil and coolant. One could...

    Goodby Stock Saddle...Hello Corbin

Corbin saddles, in my experience, seem to have a 'patent' seat profile that forces the rider to sit in the Corbin-bucket they've built into the seat. On some I've seen, that 'bucket' is rather rear-ward and would cause your thighs to need to go out and over the edge before your legs could go...

    Oil Level in Forks

Pretty much... There have been motorcycle forks in the past with vented caps -- giving pure damping and spring rates (unadulterated by air-compression). Of course, that was part of the reason old bikers wore leather... There have also been forks with large-ish air reservoirs -- giving...

    Whoa!

Wiki-interesting: "The Cecropia Moth...is North America's largest native moth...with a wingspan of 130 mm or more (5+ inches)." "The females emit pheromones at night, which the male can detect with its large, plumose antennae. Males can fly for miles in order to reach a female. The moths mate...

    Going to the Dark Side

If the FJR rider is only using (like:) 20~30% of the bike's capabilities? -- well, then, I guess? -- not much? But, what about when 'the fit hits the shan' and you're caught outside your 'comfy zone'...? Things like this are why motor vehicles are more & more being forced...
