What I love most about this rally is that every rider has taken a different route. I have a handful of private Spots, and each one is different. It's quite interesting just seeing how 87 people can come up with 87 ways to skin the cat. I think in past rallies there was always a certain "winning...

I talked to Grants Pass rider last night. (Actually Oregon Caves) He's confident he can make it, and actually is visiting very few bonuses between now and the CP. His goal is the NPT, finisher status. He doesn't care about points. The majority of riders in ID/MT/WY are most likely paying...

I totally would have gone to his rest stop, waited until he appeared, and introduced myself. That kind of thing does wonders for a rider's morale. It's lonely out there.

Re rest bonuses: Spoke to a rider this morning. There is a rest bonus in this leg, with points given on a variable basis for time up to 8 hours.

My Gerlach stay was not really voluntary - it was necessary. But I get your point, different things to different people.

So I don't know nothin' 'bout nothin', but just from the seat of my pants I'd figure that the West is where you scoop as many parks as possible and don't worry too much about collecting states. That part will work itself out. Then in the East it kinda switches around, get all those states. You...

This morning the first three private spots I checked are within 50 miles of each other, all on the I-15 corridor north of SLC. Some are aimed at Golden Spike NM or perhaps Promontory Point. Then I looked at the overall map, and there's a big freight train headed north up I-15. Seems to be some...

In case you read Cimino's Day 1 report early, better read it again. He's made an addendum. www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2015/Day1.pdf

Saw somewhere that there were 300 possible bonus locations. They'd have to include more than just National Parks. And I have a few riders' individual spot tracks, they definitely stopped at Petroglyph. Am guessing that they borrowed from 2011, and you just have to do the minimum for the IBA...

Petroglyph NM was a freebie. Right in town.

I've been wondering the same thing. Go time is 12 minutes from now, but they seem to be all over town.

And the "laptop storage locker" thing could kick in this morning. Laptops available long enough to load the waypoints into the GPS. Yank the laptops before the ride starts. Plan with maps! Pure speculation naturally.

In years past the FJR Forum has been the absolute best place on the internet for actual inside information on the rally, as well as speculation, both wild and informed. That's what keeps it fun. So let me begin with some speculation: Our man @Lipps is going to finish very well. I mean, extremely...

    Avoiding LA traffic?

I've been in traffic jams heading to Bite the Wieenie, which is 11 PM on a Saturday night. You never can tell. LA sucks. I think your most solid bet is early in the morning on a weekend. Get a room in Ventura and set the alarm clock. By the way, San Jose isn't on the coast either. :) So I...
