Ok, let me try to offer some clarity.😄

The hair dye was spray on, wash out stuff. Only the winner, chosen by applause volume,(measured with a dB meter), was required to leave it in for the start. Note, this was the first time a virgin led riders out of the lot, or so I overheard.

Yes, to be a finisher riders must collect 50 national "parks" and from 25 individual states, or 24 states and DC, which for the rally is treated as a state. Points mean nothing in regards to making it to finisher status this time. IOW, no minimum points level to be a finisher this year.

Yes, you can collect more parks or states. No rider should have any trouble getting 50 parks from the list of nearly 350 specific parks, recreational areas, etc.

However,it won't be difficult to screw the pooch and not get 25 states.

Yes, every bonus has a point value. Yes, it may be that the point value for a bonus may be different for different legs...

Yes, it may be possible to collect the same location more than once, if on different legs, or not, depending on the route the rider needs to get their states.

But it won't count for another state or park, just get the rider more points.

Points will dedetermine placement among the other finishers. Riders do collect those points all during the rally.

But the smart rider that just wants to finish will ignore point values. Only getting the 50 minimum parks and at least 25 individual states will make them a finisher.

Points only come into play once a rider has accomplished finisher status.

Hope that helps clear up some things.

More photos from the dinner and start.

Well, I'm no rallier, but I know how to read a map. Anyone that headed east is nuts. They have to come back to Albuquerque and then go to Tennessee. Break through AZ and then into Utah. You can hit almost 10 national parks in one day. Run to Cali, turn north, and grab parks as they head back east to NM and then south from what should be the bottom of Montana.

I can't believe Joshua went to Big Bend. I've been there and it's a long desolate ride for only ONE park in heavy heavy heat. Bonus points would have to be way more than 4x for me to care. However, he took 2nd last time, I'm sure he's not dumb and I'm sure he has a plan. I just don't see it yet.

I would avoid Kansas at all costs. LE presence is ridiculous and getting performance awards for 3 over is not unheard of.

Puppychow gave me some seriously good insight regarding CA's parks and how to be in and out fast. People with that experience will excel.

In my opinion and purely my opinion (I did look at the points value sheet, but do not recall it accurately) - the big parks aren't worth the aggravation for most riders. Plenty of smaller obscure parks which are much easier to get in and out of and which would be virtually deserted.

BIg Bend must be some ridiculously large point total on leg 1 to attempt it. That's the only thing I can think of.

This is too much fun. Maybe I'll stay up all night watching and just skip work tomorrow. The guy headed for Tonapah is way out in left field. And the guy headed east on I70 must be aiming for St. Louis, jump off point for the Lewis and Clark Expedition? Maybe there's a bonus bonus for getting all the Lewis and Clark sites - that would take you from St. Lewis, MO to Astoria, OR, definitely a BIG DOG ride.

And did anyone ride the Moki Dugway to get Natural Bridges?

Eric, I could be mistaken, but 99% sure that two rookies led the field in 2009. That was the year with the rotax bikes and the two brave souls who attempted that, both rookies, led the field. Alex Harper and Barry B - can't recall his last name at the moment, but a very good guy who stopped to help a friend broken down in the middle of nowhere Montana on his way home from Spokane.

Ooooo, I just noticed that two riders do NOT have a clearly identified flag in the photo. That's exactly what I would have been super paranoid about. I checked all the trackers first, sat here thinking, why would you go east??? Then read the reports and commentary here, seems all of us armchair riders are thinking the same thing. Thought processes are a bit different when you're looking at a rally pack. The report also said that Phil and Josh went to Big Bend, but I've only been seeing one SPOT down there, one appears to still be south of I-10...

For the same reason as everyone else, I feel like the way to go was west and north on this leg. You get the eastern stuff on the way to and from TN.

Kitty,

I may very well be wrong, but I think the flags are there. Appears to be two or three couples, where there is one flag for the pair. But perhaps I am missing something at this early hour.

Always fun reading the IBR musings here!

I'll be arriving in ABQ on the 9th from CA. Watching the rally end and the closing dinner. Go, Erik, Go!

That white BMW GS followed by the black scooter near the end both went North on Louisiana while everyone else followed the escort to the freeway and went south. I wondered what that was about, I guess we'll see eventually.
