NASCAR - afraid of the rain.

Best description of NASCAR I've read: "Watching NASCAR is like watching a bag of Skittles being flushed down a toilet." Pretty much summed it up for me. *yawn* Rancho

    Left-turning cager kills rider

I had posted this to ADV as well, but wanted to put it here as well. Pay attention folks. They sure as hell aren't. After 10 or 15 minutes they were still doing chest compressions. And they said they had called his kids as the ambulance was leaving. The odds were as tilted for him as they...

    My shop manual is disintegrating

Shoulda bought something more reliable so you didn't have to use the manual so much. +1 on the 3-ring binder. Rancho

Rear subframe crack fixes (Gen 1)

Yeah, this ain't good. It's pretty definitively cracked all the way through. I'll probably hack something together--taking the top box off--so I can ride it to a fabricator for his opinion. My local Yammy dealer suggested a shop called Shirley Design in HB. Anyone heard anything good or bad...

Rear subframe crack fixes (Gen 1)

If I ever master that one I'm gonna make my wife very happy. ;) Thanks for the insight on the pricing. I've called Steve's a few times, but keep getting a busy signal. Rancho

Rear subframe crack fixes (Gen 1)

LOL Yay! I get 100% for reading comprehension. :yahoo: Mom will be so proud. :biggrinsmiley: I'll post some pics this evening and submit to the collective wisdom. I only glanced at it this morning and said to myself, "Self. That is not something you want to ride down the 405 this...

Rear subframe crack fixes (Gen 1)

Excellent! Bad news is that apparently I'm going to have to buy a new (salvage) subframe based on the comments about repairing a broken one versus reinforcing an unbroken one. Quick Google says $600 new. Dialing for dollars at the salvage yards, I guess. I'll just take the top box off and...

Rear subframe crack fixes (Gen 1)

So I went out to the bike this morning all geared up & ready to go. Tossed today's paper into the Shad top box and...hmmm...that's not good. The box was moving vertically quite a bit and with noises that were not nice. Hmmm Popped off the seat and, voila, cracks. :angry2: Now I've got...

    Fuseblock install party?

Not sure if it'll be any help, but here's how I installed my fuse block. I just ran some huge-*** cable to the battery and used a nut and bolt through the side of the airbox to mount one side of the block. The other is held in place by the positive cable, which hasn't been an issue. Right...

    Talk Me Down

I kinda reached the conclusion that the folks who don't care about a 6th gear are the ones who live in states with aggressive enforcement of freeway speed limits. When I'm cruising at 80+ on the freeway for an hour, yeah, I want a 6th gear. Rancho

Installing a Fuzeblock Under Passenger Seat

I attached my fuseblock to the airbox under the right sidecover and ran cables from the battery down the right side of the frame under the tank. There's a bolt running through a just-big-enough hole into the airbox with a nylok nut on the inside and the wire tie on the positive wire holds the...

    New brake disc shudder?

Nah, you should see my rant about cookies at the ADV forum if you wanna see me get excited. I did put the OEM rotors and new pads back on and everything is fine, though I still think the Galfers are much more responsive and aggressive than the OEMs. Haven't diddled with 'em yet, but...

    New brake disc shudder?

Shouldn't be that. When I put the Galfers on I put brand spanking new YamaMama pads on also. Dunno..... Rancho

    New brake disc shudder?

OK, so I grabbed a brush for cleaning wheels and a few cans of brake cleaner and a Scotchbrite pad and went to town on the rotors. And I put a piece of sandpaper on a slab of glass I have for sharpening chisels and planes and sanded the pads down until it was all new surface. And then I...

    parasitic Datel?

FWIW, I put mine in the mirror but think that I'd prefer it not be there and that's not a mod you can easily <ctrl><x>. I also found that I had to run a wire from the bolt & stud holding the mirror to the bike to the negative lead of the battery to get a good reliable connection...

    Thinking of buying a FJR1300 2005

Well yeah, it's common, but ISTM that if the driver/rider is gonna be sittin' on the damned thing they'd .... awww fukit. It is what it is, eh? <_< (But why on earth would you run two fuel lines from the gas tank at the back of a car to the engine? Seems the hard way to me.) Can ya...

    Biggest riser made?

I put the Helibars on my Gen I after deciding that straight-up-only D&D risers weren't enough. I would probably consider mounting both of them at the same time (risers on risers) if it didn't mean I'd have to totally reconfigure or replace all the cables and hoses. Helibars make a huge...

    Thinking of buying a FJR1300 2005

I wouldn't worry unduly about not being able to flat foot the bike. I'm five foot eight and have a 30 inch inseam. I don't think I was able to flat-foot the bike with the stock saddle and I know I can't with the Russell I've got on her now, but I've never had a tipover where being on the balls...

    New brake disc shudder?

BTW Warchild, it occured to me today: Is this something I'll have to do on a regular basis or is it a do it once and they're good to go for life? Thanks! Rancho
