Another no start...well starts after a few pushes of the button

I just replaced the starter on an 04 that the owner was saying she thought she heard the fuel pump charge when the starter button was pressed. Actually it was the starter motor spinning, but dragging so much it was not fast enough to engage the starter(mechanical). It was also drawing over 100...

Update: Carver starter installed and the bike is up and running. Cleaned the ignition as best I could and got reasonable resistance readings consistantly, so left that in. We will replace it during my spring tech day.

    Reinstalling camshaft question

Judging from your picture it looks like you can put the one on cyl #4. Then you can get the others started and bring it down evenly. You can push the cam down enough by hand to get the cover on cyl #1 then put the other covers on and tighten them all down evenly. I seriously doubt you could put...

Just took the starter back off and tested again. It is drawing >70 amps unloaded. That is no good. Drawing > 100 amps on the bike. I don't think is turning fast enough to start the bike. Anyone have a starter laying around?

2006 died on freeway on way home from trip

I don't thenk the Gen2's have any rubber boot. On a recent ride with Powerman, he said he was seeing the neutral light flicker. This is another symptom of that relay going bad. He had a spare with him, but when we stopped and pulled it there was corrosion in the connection. He cleaned the...

Greg: I think this may be what Heidi was hearing when she was trying to start it. Starting has been a problem for a while with this bike. Ray: That is where I will go next. I will still pull the starter back out and run it to see if it is still just drawing 10 amps unloaded.

Here is the latest: New battery installed, ignition jumped, Hit start and the starter motor just spins. No engine turn over. The starter is also drawing 100 amps and the engine isn't even turning. Starter draws 10 amps off the bike. I need to try that again just to be sure that is still the...

Scott, that is not a DC ammeter. It will read DC volts, so that is why "DC" is in the title. Look at the product description!

BTW, as an update, when I took the starter out I turned it by hand and it felt like it didn't turn as easy as I thought it should. I took it apart to inspect everything and found it clean and the brushes, armature and windings in decent shape. I wondered, however, how I was going to get it back...

After you have done it more than once, it isn't that big of a deal. Besides, I already had the tank off.

I have a spare starter relay by chance. I will try it with bolted connections to my truck battery. My jumper was made with 10 AWG wire.
