Possible smokin' deal on a factory trunk (ebay)

$100 sounds great. Will anyone actually get it for $100? Nah. Will the final sale price be a great deal? Nah again...

    2014 Electronic Suspension Spring Rates

I don't plan to ride two-up and don't have a 150 lb passeger to put on the back seat. I weigh about 235. By the time I add the bags, contents and my riding gear, that will probably be a total of about 260 lbs. People need to run their own test if they want to know their own situation exactly...

    2014 Electronic Suspension Spring Rates

A point some have missed: A '685 lb spring' does not refer to a spring that pushes back with a force of 685 lbs. '685 lb' is the spring RATE, which is actually pounds per inch of compression. If the spring is not compressed, it produces no force whatsoever. If you compress it one inch, it pushes...

Iron Clad "5 Out of 6 Iron Butt Rally Top Finishers Rode An FJR"

The fact that the IBR top finishers were not on particularly recent models (and probably not low-mileage) FJRs says a couple of things. 1. An FJR remains reliable, even after a lot of miles. 2. Their riders have great confidence in them. IMHO, that's a pretty good testimonial.

    Valve adjustment shims

To get the entire shim surface reduced to an equal dimension, one should use a surface grinder or a suitable lathe fixture and a toolpost grinder.

Iron Clad "5 Out of 6 Iron Butt Rally Top Finishers Rode An FJR"

There are LOTS of people who think you're not a REAL ironbutt rally rider unless you are on a BMW, and there was a time that BMWs were more reliable than other bikes. Times have changed- other bikes have gotten better and BMW reliability has decreased due to final drive problems and little...

Motorcyclist Review of 2014 Electronic Suspension

I'm looking forward to the 2014 ES suspension, so it can be firm in the twisties but instantly set to softer when I hit the slab and expansion joints. My Honda ST1300 had a pretty decent rear shock with a knob for preload and a screw for rebound damping, but the front end had no adjustment...

Motorcyclist Review of 2014 Electronic Suspension

Yeah, points and condensers are much more reliable and less maintenance than that pesky electronic ignition... NOT! LOL

Dual Sport - The Unexpected Passion

This is a great article to introduce people to dual-sport riding.

One of the points that really struck a chord was the remark about what a different mindset you have. Most of us nearly have a coronary when our road bike falls over, but when that happens with my 2000 Suz...

    800 Hp vs 18 Hp

The force pushing down on the wheels of the 800 lb tractor equals the weight of the tractor MINUS any upward force caused by the towing bar's upward angle. Strictly speaking, the 800 lb tractor is not being lifted OFF the ground. OTOH, the more tension there is on the steel bar, the more upward...

    Spot 2 vs Spot Connect

Had a Spot2 for several years and was happy with it until it died. Last June I got a Spot connect. The Off-on button works reliably and it does have a dedicated SOS button, which probably works. (Haven't had occasion to use it!) The Connect paired easily with my smartphone, but the app is so...

    800 Hp vs 18 Hp

Look at the red chain connecting the two tractors. It is not horizontal. It is attached much higher on the steam tractor. When the two tractors pull against each other, the tension on the chain increases. Due to the angle of the chain, increasing tension pulls upward on the 800hp tractor...

    Wee strom

How many times have you been on a road ride over unfamiliar roads that unexpectedly turned into an adventure ride on gravel? It happens so often with the friends I ride with that we have a running joke: "No day is complete without a little dual-sporting!" Likewise, have been on lots of...

    Wee strom

Am retired from AMA enduro & dual-sport riding, now ride mostly easy stuff like forest service gravel roads in the appalachian mountains. Have a DRZ400e with 4gal tank, Rick Mayer seat, heated grips etc. for one-day dual-sport rides of 120-200 mi. Some of my friends do 2-week trips on...

    Wee strom

Have always liked the 650 wee strom and have ridden one on a trip. Never owned one but would like to. Don't see it as an adventure bike though. As an adventure bike, the cast wheels are not very strong and the front wheel is only 19". The suspension components are not strong enough for any...

    2014 horn

Hardly ever use the horn. If you have time to blow it, it's not an emergency. The toot of a horn usually comes off as an expression of anger, offending the tootee. Probably wiser to keep quiet and be on your way.

    The 2014 FJR1300 - Woo-hoo!

Re 'Group buy' over on ST-owners.com: Speaking as one who is coming off an ST1300, the choice is pretty simple- I could replace my 03 ST1300 with an identical bike with no miles on it, but if I want something NEW I heve to look at a different brand/model. My 03 ST with 120k miles would be good...

Gen2/3 Subframe Stiffy Kit by Garauld

Would have loved to get one of these, but found that Garauld is not accepting PMs. Those who were able to get these brackets were lucky indeed!
