Won't stay in 4th gear - What should I do?

...as long as the dealership isn't bending you over on the price of a motor transplant. May I ask what they're getting for the job? What are they doing with the old motor? Good luck!

Won't stay in 4th gear - What should I do?

If you decide to go with option 3, I can help you, neighbor. But still, that's around $500 in parts & stuff. I think I'd look around for a lower mile Gen 1 engine and do a transplant if I were in your situation. Or, like RH said..**** 4th; 4 stages of gear reduction are plenty.

Ok, do you "fast shift" or "slow shift"?

Yes, you can't guarantee you're unloading the transmission enough to not bend a shift fork during upshifting, IMHO. They're a bit uhh...fraah-gee-lay. Cutting back the throttle unloads a bunch of torque off of the trans, but not entirely. Yes, in theory, I suppose you could be a frickin Rainman...

Twisty routes around Palm Springs, Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead?

Strangely enough I did the bottom half of your second route on Saturday. Nice route, very scenic and the temps aren't that high this time of the year. S22 in Imperial County, that road quality is ****, make sure you've got everything fastened down. I mean I don't think they've paved it since...

Ok, do you "fast shift" or "slow shift"?

As the guy in the forum who has split his case open twice to fix 2nd gear, I shift deliberately, which I guess most of the time is quickly. Always with the clutch, even before the trans issues, FWIW, but now I'm preloading upshifts and holy **** I shoulda done that to start with. Preload the...

    Motus Motorcycle Now In Production

Beautiful looking bike, even better sounding ( ), but alas, waaay out of my price range. Happy to see them be able to separate the transmission from the crankcase for a glimmer of hope of a future shafty version. And no ABS, that should've been high on the list of needs. They could've gone...

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

Hell, now I think you're even more qualified to do it. What's the risk in splitting the old one to see how challenging it is for yourself?

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

No problem James, there are some parts that you can use that simply aren't wear items, that little contact and spring are two of them. On the "A" (internal & external) linkage off of your old bike are some of the others. I suspect what Yamaha means by "shift actuator" is the shift shaft (13)...

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

Part #s 2 and 3 can be found here, just pull them out with your fingers or needle nose pliers. It's a spring loaded contact for the gear position switch.

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

The big slotted shaft that's coming out of the back of the shift drum is for the AE's push button shift feature. The black "sensor" you took off is a torque motor that spins that slotted shaft (and the shift drum) about 50-60 degrees every time you push the shift up/down button. This way, the...

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

Yes, the "shaft mechanism" you're looking at is the back side of the shift drum. That's the only internal piece that should need replacement. The shift shaft should be the same except for the dot on the outside part that tells you where to line up the clamp for the shift linkage, since those...

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

That old engine is probably worn beyond cost effective repair. HOWEVER, for the valve cover gasket to blow out because of over pressurization of the crank case that would tell me that your crank vent was plugged somehow. There's a PCV line between the top of the trans of the old motor and the...

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

James, I think you're going to find there are no case differences between the two engines. That would probably be cost prohibitive from Yamaha's standpoint to have two different engine cases for the same model with no other internal differences. In fact, my (and your) A engine has an unused...

Converting Gen 2 AE to A engine - is it possible?

Sorry about the problems you've been having with finding a new engine, I don't think may people on this forum will be doing business with DL Cycle Salvage after this debacle. I've had my engine split twice to fix a 2nd gear issue, and can tell you it is a fairly straightforward job if you want...

    Wrecked the '15 already

So sorry to hear about the mishap on your brand new bike. I know you're kicking yourself over it, but it's just money. Shortly you'll have it looking good as new, AND any bike accident where you can walk away is a good one. This could've gone much, much worse. Take solace in that.

Moving to LA, Culver City from New Jersey - Shipping Company?

You may want to consider flying back and riding it because in order to register it here in CA, my understanding is you have to have 7500 miles on the ODO. I'd be happy to ride it back for you next spring, I've got family in North Jersey. Lots of fantastic roads here.
