Fastener failure - a new approach

I think if there's sufficient tension on the thing to compress it, the same amount of tension on just the drain bolt alone would do the trick. The knurling would be ineffective, as it would be resting against the sealing washer, and not on the surface of the final drive, so in this particular...

    David Bowie

RIP Ziggy Stardust While I was never a fan, I appreciated that he had a significant influence on music, and the arts.

What did you do to your FJR today?

Fresh gear oil in the rear gear thingy. Did engine oil/filter change a few days ago. Ordered a couple of liters of fork fluid by phone from the Honda dealership in Penticton, since there ain't no more Yammy dealer unless I drive to Kelowna, and they're too damn pricey anyway. No rush. Snow...

    LED Light bar

Also, there's a limit of two auxiliary lights one may legally mount on the front of a motor vehicle. The two small lights on the forks are always on when the bike is running, so are considered 'daytime running lights'! Take a look at the regs for BC. Nova Scotia may have different ones.

    LED Light bar

However you mount auxiliary lights, you'll want to be careful not to place them too high. In BC, for example, the max distance is 42" from the center of the light to the road surface. I mounted my clearwater lights using the supplied mirror brackets, with the lights on the upper surface, and...

Guitar Lessons - I'm going to do it!

Good stuff! A while back I was coaxed on stage to play an improv version for the solo section of 'Mustang Sally' with my (real) musician friend, Jeff Lakey I played a vintage '67 Guild Starfire I'd purchased for a 'song' (ha ha!) sometime earlier. Somehow, I managed to pull off a decent...

    Below freezing riding

A few years ago, (OK, quite a few!), I rode my Norton around a couple of blocks in the snow after a rare winter snowfall in Victoria BC. The 850 weighed in at @ 430 lbs, iirc, so it wasn't too difficult to stay upright, but there was very little traction, and I was happy to park her back in the...

    Scam email warning.

According to google, yandex.com appears to originate out of Russia, and is infamously the source for various scams, since they offer a free email service. I highly doubt our Don would have ever knowingly used a yandex.com email address, but it's possible someone in the contacts has a...

    Rear header mount separation

I would check and re-torque all engine mount bolts. See the FSM for correct procedure, and use a quality, calibrated torque wrench. Leaving the exhaust mount bolts off may not cause any reliability issues, but may result in more or different vibration, and I would replace them if it were on my...

Guitar Lessons - I'm going to do it!

I'm currently learning using the excellent 'Learn & Master' DVD set of lessons by Steve Krenz. Highly recommended. The lessons require that you also learn how to read music, but that is taught in a more-or-less painless manner. My advice: Learn basic stuff, preferably on a well set up...

    190/55 on the rear ?

Installed a 190 on mine, and have been pleased with the result. Speedo is more accurate, and turn-in is a bit quicker, as the geometry is shifted a little. It does raise the bike a very small amount, so with the RDL saddle makes me glad my legs aren't much shorter. Although I don't have a...

    Newfie logger

A Newfie is applying for a job, but the foreman hates Newfies, so he must correctly answer three questions! "Here’s your first question,” the foreman said. “Without using numbers, represent the number 9.” “Without numbers?” The Newfie says. “Dat is easy,” and proceeds to draw three trees...

    GenII Rear Fender Replacement, PITA?

Although I've not had occasion to remove the rear fender, as AJ noted, the FSM is fond of tacking on extraneous tasks to various procedures. For example: According to the manual official procedure, when one wishes to remove the radiator, one must also remove the throttle bodies. When one...

    Galfer it or Not

If the hydraulics have been normally maintained, and the exteriors of the lines have not been subject to damage - chemical or environmental, they will last a long, long time. As the rayzerman said, the manufacturers are covering their butts. I check my lines annually, and would replace them...
