    It's hard to get maintenance...

Late last year, I needed someone to mount a set of tires on my '05 in the Austin, TX area, and the combination of long lead times at the local dealers and their generally crappy online reviews caused me to look into independent shops. I found a small shop a few miles away that got good reviews...

Split: Off-topic about Nevada, Gears, and Other Stuff

I did a 17 hour BBG in Nevada a few years back on my '05, and never felt a 6th gear was needed. Aux lights, definitely (thanks, Justin!), but a 6th gear wasn't required.

    2019 Iron Butt Rides

I rode Mattole Road on my FJR about 4-5 years ago - as Ray says, the road conditions are crap. Doable for experienced riders, but it'll be like riding on gravel - total concentration needed the entire way.

No more Zumo 660, no more Garmin

In the ideal world, there'd be a weather-proof, glove-friendly, bluetooth-enabled motorcycle-specific head unit for Android Auto and/or Apple Carplay. This would give you all the power of your phone's nav and audio tools with a UI customized for the motorcycle rider. Maybe someday.

    Winter Jacket Advice Needed

i've also been wearing the Tourmaster Flex jacket for many years, and find it works really well for the type of riding I do. When it rains, I put on a relatively inexpensive waterproof outer jacket and overpants. When it gets cold, I add a Warm&Safe heated jacket, and when it gets really cold...

WTB Powerlet Low Profile Plug to Female Coax

Powerlet.com has the 6" low-profile Powerlet-to-Female-Coax plug set (PPC-028-06) for about $20, and the web site lists them as 'available now': I plug the 6" version into my Powerlet outlet mounted in Panel D, then have a coax-extension to reach the plug on my heated jacket. On really long...

What's the Weather like where YOU are today?

After heavy rains last week, today it'll be 84° F (29C) here in Austin, Texas, with a few wispy high clouds. Overnight it's been in the low 60's F (17C). Overall, I can't complain.

    FJR Mileage Milestones

On a ride through the Midwest last week for the Melting Pot Grand Tour, I stopped for gas in Independence, Missouri just as the odo turned over to 125,000 miles:

What's the Weather like where YOU are today?

I have an all-day BMR ride planned for Friday, and today through the end of the week is forecast with lows in the mid-20s and highs in the mid-40s (-7C to 8C). My destination is showing 37/65 (3C/17C) on Friday. There's no rain or snow in the forecast, so the roads will be dry, but it...

What's the Weather like where YOU are today?

At my home in the High Desert northeast of Los Angeles, it's 60°F now, on its way to 72° this afternoon. Clear and sunny.

What did you do to your FJR today?

I got the Word of the Day on New Year's Day ('happy') in 72° weather, less than a mile from my house. Doesn't get easier. I've got a ride planned for this upcoming weekend - 875 miles, 60+ points. If the weather holds, it should be fun.

What did you do to your FJR today?

The leather cover on my old Bill Mayer saddle had split its seams, so I found a local upholstery shop to re-cover it in black leather. I picked it up yesterday, and it looks really good -- and at a very reasonable price. I've also been getting the bike ready for the BMR, which begins on New...

    Broken Penske Clevis.

Is it just me, or does the title of this thread sound like the name of an '80s New Wave band?

What did you do to your FJR today?

I was off the bike for a couple of months, first due to a minor bout of bronchitis, then with battery issues. Last weekend I installed a new battery, and yesterday I replaced the Powerlet jack in dash panel D, so the bike was ready to go. Today, I did a short, 80 mile shake-down ride up into...

World Record Attempt For Miles Ridden in 24 Hours.

Here's a sample of the roads in Central Nevada, showing the route from Alamo, NV to Tonopah, NV using the ET Highway. Other road sections in the area are similar. There are long stretches of straights (although these have some elevation changes), with a few sweeping turns. In the section...

World Record Attempt For Miles Ridden in 24 Hours.

The rides I mentioned were either completely non-Interstate, or had a < 5% Interstate segment. In Central Nevada, you don't need Interstates to make fast miles - just talent and a well-prepped bike.

World Record Attempt For Miles Ridden in 24 Hours.

As staff at a rally held in central Nevada, I've personally certified three FJR riders with 24 hour mileage totals that exceed this 'world record', using procedures approved by the leading long distance motorcycle certification organization. I can only imagine the mileage totals that those...

    San Antonio Suggestions

I haven't been to the Blacks BBQ in Lockhart, but their location in Austin on Guadalupe is fantastic. (In Austin, it's pronounced Guada-loop, for some reason. When in Rome...)
