    YFO 2017 - Yosemite and Beyond - June 1-3, 2017

In case you didn't watch the video, be sure to bring your rain gear with you when you visit the park. There is a lot of spray around the bigger falls.

YFO 2017 Yosemite Group Ride Planning Thread

We were over Carson Pass a couple of times last week. The roadway over the Spur is in very bad shape and we did not see any repair work underway. There were also a lot of potholes all along the higher part of 88. +1 on Monitor Pass. Hopefully Ebbetts and Sonora will be open by the time you get...

    Front vs Rear Tire Wear

Bill, I think you nailed it. One should always do the needed braking before the turn but bad habits are easy to acquire and hard to lose. I was also used to using the rear brake alone to help set up the turn, but the K1200KTfoot brake is not linked to the front and is more effective than the...

    Front vs Rear Tire Wear

Love the Z8's. We've considered trying the 01's but price and availability of the Z8's wins out for now.

Anyone using something other than original side cases

This is our only complaint about the FJR. The latches to open the bags are a particular problem. More than once I was afraid I was going to break the latch to get at my clothes. Even if you wiggle the lid while trying to open it, sometimes it just will not open. Took them to the shop on the...

    Front vs Rear Tire Wear

Hmm. The FJR is a much sportier ride than the '07 K1200GT. We are both riding more aggressively than before and often go out on some local twisties for a few hours of fun. We don't charge away from stop signs or lights so that would help the rear tire life. Both tires wear evenly, with no...

    Front vs Rear Tire Wear

Hmm. Lots of good information. Think I might try a bit higher pressure in the front. I have the ES so cannot tweak the suspension as with the A. BTW, Theresa went through her OEM front tire in 4 k. However the suspension was as from the factory. After reading Ashe's treatise on suspension...

    Front vs Rear Tire Wear

Yes, I did try searching but found everything except what I was looking for! On all of our BMW's, the rear tire would wear quicker than the front. This was the case with various Michelins, Z6's and Z8's. Typically with the Z6, the rear would last just less than 6 k and the front between 8 and 9...

    Yamaha #1 in Reliability

@jammess. If the BMW tele-lever front suspension is so great, why has BMW gone to inverted forks on the S1000 series and some of the new R bikes? The ball joint is a high failure rate item, but many do not realize it as the joint binds up slowly and you think you've just lost your mojo. I lost a...

The stealth not-quite-black of the 2015's not only makes it slip through the air easier, it also lets you go faster without looking as obviously fast as if it were red.

    YFO 2017 - Yosemite and Beyond - June 1-3, 2017

Lots of traffic control locations (7 now) on 101 in northern California because of recurring landslides. Had to change our trip plans a few days ago as 101 was closed by a landslide. Many of the roads are in bad shape from poor maintenance and snow clearing operations. Pavement on Carson Spur on...

    Yamaha #1 in Reliability

That's why we sold our '07 BMW K1200GT's and bought FJR's. Theresa quit work last July so we could get in a lot of riding in the next few years. We needed bikes that were on the road, not in the shop. Now we find that the FJR's also handle better than the K1200GT's.

Tinted Handguards (In a Very Cheap Price!)

Anyone have a problem with increased vibration? I mounted a set on my 2015 ES as shown in post 18. Slight increase in vibration at lower rpm but quite a bit worse in the 4 k to 5k range. Cruising at 75 to 85 for a long time would be quite uncomfortable. Any ideas or similar experience?

3rd Gen ES Suspension Problems Poll

Only have 11 k miles on my 2015 that I bought 11 months ago. If I'd had any problems by now I'd be complaining long and loud! I will say it definitely works better than the ESA on my '07 K1200GT. Fred's graphic above is excellent! Really makes it clear. BTW, what does Yamaha consider for the...

Un-Linking Front Brakes on 2nd Gens (and later)

One of my concerns about going to the FJR after the '07 K1200GT was the difference in the braking system. I was used to a tap on the rear brake to set up a corner and, sometimes, to give a little extra braking without using the front brake which tends to stand the bike up. I find that the setup...

    Metzeler Z8 -- Which Spec?

Thanks. Looks like I will be going with the same ones as on the BMW, which are the same as the BMW dealer put on my FJR.

    Metzeler Z8 -- Which Spec?

Metzeler lists different specs for both the front and rear Z8's on the >2013 FJR1300A. (They don't list the ES versions at all but I think they would be the same.) For the front they list an (M) spec, and one without a designation. For the 180/55 rear they show a © and an (O) spec. I sent a...

    YFO 2017 - Yosemite and Beyond - June 1-3, 2017

#4 Ebbetts pass (my favorite) will probably be closed, or at least not suitable for 2 wheels. But, as you say, there are plenty of great roads in the area. 49 north from Mariposa, up the old Priest's Grade, down the new one and back to Mariposa would be fun. Riding a road like that in the...

Replace my Zumo 550 with ?

"To quickly return to the Menu page, push and hold Back." As for support from Garmin, I had good luck with emailing the support guys. Took a day or two but they always had the answer. I had email addresses from a couple of the guys who helped out with my old NAV III. This time I was impatient...

Replace my Zumo 550 with ?

You Da Man! I got it now. The manual that came with mine did not show this at all. It did mention the "Map Detail" setting but not how to make the changes as you described. Thanks again.
