Resolved!: Screwed up big -- trusted the dealer for the first valve check

Well, calmed down a little now. Was fit to spit nails for a while. It just keeps getting more interesting. I went to the dealer today, expecting to pick the bike up and nurse it home -- but when I got there it was still in pieces. They recognize that it isn't running correctly, with the idle...

Resolved!: Screwed up big -- trusted the dealer for the first valve check

I work in a closed area -- no cell phones or electronics -- so just voice mail contact for today. Service writer says his Yamaha tech and other tech (non Yamaha?) have checked everything cold and hot, and the bike is running "to par". Couldn't get to the shop today, but plan to go get it...

Resolved!: Screwed up big -- trusted the dealer for the first valve check

O.K., today I get a voice mail from the service writer that both tells me that it's good, and makes me even more nervous. He reports they determined the post valve adjustment throttle body synch was too far off to idle. I have trouble enough with that, but he says it's running "to O.E.M...

Resolved!: Screwed up big -- trusted the dealer for the first valve check

I dropped the bike off via trailer, just to be sure the engine was cool enough. Hans, the service writer, started the motor during sign-in, which surprised me, but he said it wasn't run long enough to effect the measurements. It started right up, of course, but I suspect Hans has already...

Resolved!: Screwed up big -- trusted the dealer for the first valve check

I knew better. Delegation is the most sincere way to show you don't care how something turns out, and I delegated my valve clearance check to a local dealer. They (Central Florida Powersports in the Orlando area) have great Google and Angie's List reviews, and my old Concours really wore me out...

    Timken front wheel bearings -none

Well both Timken and Fafnir are not what they used to be, with 'global' sourcing (i.e. first china quality) having become part of their business model, so I wouldn't sweat it too much. Every SKF I've bought in the last year or two has been of first quality, so if they make a bearing, it would be...

Stock air filter - is it supposed to be 'oiled'?

There is actual measured data. https://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html K&Ns flow both more air and more dirt. The more air part is only when you are at really high RPMs -- where I don't spend any time.

2008 FJR vs 2015 Triumph Trophy SE

I too was hoping the Trophy would be a good answer, but they took everything I like about the Sprint ST and ditched it. And just so dang big -- particularly side to side. Those bags look too wide for the Grand Canyon, more than 8" wider.

    Cylinder wall thickness

I don't know, I was on a 400+ mile ride today, and on two occasions a quick glance at the speedo resulted in 'oh crap!' & chop the throttle responses. Not sufficiently into jewelry for silver bracelets...

    Valve Lifter "Bucket"

Apparently, the color coding has to do with lifter bore diameter. Found an R1 reference -- but not much of anything else! https://www.r1-forum.com/forums/101-98-99-r1-mechanical-help/262039-99-valve-lifter-problem.html

do I need a new battery?

"Oem GS from your Yamaha dealer is very very good!" Interesting observation. BikeBandit lists it at $130. That's not the worst battery value I've seen.

    Very old Castrol gear oil...

While the oil is undoubtedly fine, the containers may not be. I've been rearranging my garage (new 52" tool box!) and when I relocated some motor and gear oil in quite aged plastic bottles, no less than two of them decided now was a good time to crack and dribble. Nice puddle.

Looking at trading my 08 M109R2 for an 08 FJR...thoughts?

Quite a number of us have discovered that the factory seat that felt wonderful on a short demo ride wasn't quite so wonderful at the several hundred mile point. Check the idle speed, below 1050 can lead to some snatchiness at off-idle transitions. Adjustment is a thumb screw under the tank --...

    Oil filter change

Don't over tighten the drain plug (there's a search for you).

    Key blank

We should really carry an extra key for every vehicle we operate. Motorcycles with full fairings can be an excellent lesson in the need -- drop a key down the inside of the fairing at a roadside stop, and see how much fun it is to try to fish that key out of the quite hot exhaust pipes...

    Key blank

My local Ace hardware always has YH63 HYKO blanks on hand -- I guess Ilco got too pricey (less profit?). Taiwan sourced, so still a step up from China. As previously noted, an actual locksmith will have the Ilco on hand, and be able to cut it right the first time. Even with the correct blank...

    OUCH.

Others will disagree, but I say cut your losses and move on. It's a lot like new shoes. If your feet aren't comfortable the first time you put a pair on, they never will be. You didn't mention, but I have to wonder what you rode before? I'm betting the riding position was significantly less...
