+1 on the threaded rod approach. Allows for a huge amount of force and much more control than a sledgehammer. It's a real pain in the *** getting bearings stuck in at a slight angle. Don't ask how I know.

I bought this to attach to a Pinewood Derby car. I ran our Pack's Pinewood Derby for 8 years and was always looking for ways to make it more fun. On-board video of the car running down the track was always a big hit. Works perfectly - looks like new. Never used outdoors or attached to bike...

Now that's a solution! I much prefer mechanical fasterns over glue/tape/nylon straps. Mine have never come loose, but now you've got me thinking about breaking out my pop-rivet gun.
