The Reuben Run was so good last year, I had to do it again this year.
I took off Thursday morning and had a great ride along the N. Umpqua River along 138 out of Roseburg. This is one of my favorite roads, and right in my back yard.

After getting to LaPine and checking in at the Best Western, I headed out for a quick run up to Paulina Lakes. I rode this way last year for the first time and remembered it as a beautiful ride on a freshly paved road.

I couldn't have asked for a better ride until near the top, as I was nearing the apex of a long right sweeper, a deer started into the road from my right.
I could see all the way through the curve and up the road, so my split second decision was to try swerving into the oncoming lane to miss the deer. It worked great, and I missed the deer. Unfortunately, I went too wide and went off the road.

Things get a little fuzzy here, but I remember feeling like I hit a big gravel trap and the bike was slowing down as the front end went away. I remember thinking, "This isn't going to be too bad".
Then it felt like the bike high-sided and launched me in the air. I came down on my right shoulder and knew something broke. Looking at the way the bike ended up, it stayed on it's right side the whole way, so I don't know how I got launched.

Bottom line: End broken off of collarbone and shoulder separated. Orthopedist said today that it will require surgery to remove broken piece and repair ligaments.
My beautiful '03 is resting in Ray's shop awaiting the adjuster's verdict. It will certainly be totaled, just have to decide whether to buy it back and fix it, buy another Gen. 1 and transfer parts, or what.
(Those new red ones are damn good looking!)

Sorry to have missed the rest of the festivities, there were a lot of people I wanted to see again.
Thanks to Ray for his huge help, and all of the people who offered help and advice. See you next time.

Hey John,

Sorry to hear of the get off, but it happened this year! Look at the date on the x-ray! Glad there was no oncoming traffic. Could have been worse. Heal well and good luck with the bike.

Aw, man... that sucks John!! Sending you lots of healing thoughts/energy... bikes can always be replaced... people not so much so.

And yeah... that new red one looks pretty damn fine!

Glad you walked away from this, good to see you walking around the hotel afterwards, hope to see you next year. We had 2 deer's cross our path on Saturday and Sunday.

Good luck with the surgery and hope you heal fast.

Ouch! Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hope everything turns out okay. I hate those damn forest rats! I hit one about 12 years ago on my Buell.

John is so fixated on the 2014 FJR he forgot what year it was.

John, sorry your trip didn't end up the way we all wanted it to, that x-ray....eeeyyyytccch!

Get better, and let us know how cool the Electronic suspension and throttle by wire is!

The things some guys will do to get attention! Damn John! it really suked to see ya banged up like that.

Your bike looks fixable should you decide to go that route though. Heal up fast my friend.

Hey, John.

I'd just gotten to the hotel and was checking in, when you told me your shoulder was sore from getting off of the bike. I thought, "Oh, John's tweaked his shoulder while dismounting from his parked bike. He's just getting old like the rest of us." I didn't make the connection that you'd actually crashed until later talking with others. Duh!

So I wanted to be sure and thank you for your generous service to the this year's Reuben Run. It seems that each Run requires at least one sacrifice to the Forest Rat deity (Sam and Doug were last year's). All of us other attendees really appreciate your appeasement effort on our behalf.

John, hope you get better soon. That shoulder looks like it hurts.

And the rest of you...The date is correct. The xray was taken at 1403...military time for just after 2pm. Dorks!

Just an update. And yes, I am in the right year now.

After deciding I didn't have a good feeling about the local Ortho guy, I was referred to the Orthopedic group in Eugene, Oregon that takes care of the U of Oregon Ducks.

He decided I was healing pretty well and shouldn't need surgery. I have been off work for 4 weeks and will be off until at least Nov.13.

I am bored out of my freaking mind.
