FJRF013 - Transmission Recall for Second Gear (DE, UK, CA, & US) (2016-2020)

As of last week, both Yamaha and my dealer confirmed 200 part sets were in Atlanta, waiting for distribution. Don’t know how far those went, or if they’ve even all been claimed for affected VIN’s.

FJRF013 - Transmission Recall for Second Gear (DE, UK, CA, & US) (2016-2020)

Dropped mine off today. Scheduled service isn’t until Tuesday but I’ll be busy then.    The service manager confirmed that mine is the first that they’re doing (yay..). He said they they are allotted 15 hours to do the job, but their annually-recertified gold star tech is going to be slow and...

Losing a side case. Is this just an urban legend?

I drilled mine, but instead of using a clevis, I use a cable tie.

    2014 ES Reliability Concern

My ‘14 was superb except for a failed tps, fixed under warranty. My ‘18 has over 60k without issue, if you don’t count the recall stuff. Mine goes in for trans and switch in a week.

FJRF013 - Transmission Recall for Second Gear (DE, UK, CA, & US) (2016-2020)

I do not believe that the nhtsa site is populated with trans recalls yet. As noted, the nhtsa doc says 50% affected. I expect to see folks start reporting they got notified at this week or the next.   Out of curiousity, I’ve been checking the nhtsa site daily. I’ve entered a number of VIN’s...

    Pros/Cons of the 6th gear?

On my 2014, top speed was reached in 5th. On my 2018, top speed is reached in 5th. I can maintain in 6th, but escape velocity happens in 5th. 6th is just tall enough that it’d take me an entire county to crawl up to max.

    Heated Seat Element

I wish I had had heat included when I had my seat built.    I’ve seriously considered the $100 pad that Warmnsafe sells. I believe it would plug into my existing w&s heated gear leads.

    Barkbuster Storm Handguards on 2008

I’ve used them for a couple of years on my FJR’s. Easy to put in, easy to remove. They make a big difference, but if your hands get cold easily, they won’t replace heated gear.    With the storms, I go longer without needing any heat, get less wind up my sleeves, and my hands stay dry in light...

    Pros/Cons of the 6th gear?

Having had both back to back, the lower rpms at speed is nice. But I never felt underserved by the five speed. I can’t remember whether it was 85 or 95mph, but I was right at 1,000 rpm lower on the (2018) six speed vs. the (2014) five speed, as indicated by the tachometer on both bikes. No...

FJRF013 - Transmission Recall for Second Gear (DE, UK, CA, & US) (2016-2020)

Good info. At this point, I am as (or more) interested in CA/U.K. gen IV bikes that have not been recalled for transmission work than those that are affected. :)

    bike eats headlight bulbs

My 2014 only had two sets of bulbs, in other words, only replaced once, in over 80,000 miles. Now, my BMW poppeD headlight bulbs monthly. Regardless of what quality bulbs I used.

Introducing the most luxurious Sport Touring motorcycle: The 2021 Tracer 9 GT (???)

The most luxurious touring bike isn’t a tracer or even an fjr. But the fjr is pretty close. I wouldn’t mind a tracer for a commuter. But it’s not what I need for an ICBM.

    Parts Availability Issues

They don’t have a great depth of stock in a lot of parts, for sure.

Helibar Install Tips for the Idiot Installer

I didn’t do much of anything on either bike.  Install the extension. Gently jiggle the brake lever with the reservoir open. The tiny bit of air immediately escapes up through the reservoir.

    Genuine Yamaha Brake Pads

I’ve used EBC HH for years, and never had appreciable rotor wear.

Is the preload on the rear shock on a ES adequate ?

I can’t put enough weight or thrash on an A or ES solo to have a problem, if things are properly adjusted. But Christ in a handcart, I sure can two-up on an A or ES. I had things dialed all the way up at EOM, and with me, the wife, and some other stuff, on the snake, BOTD, and, to a lesser...

    2018 FJR Air Deflectors

Someone with fab skills needs to take a stock set of the moveable knee panels and build them up so they flare out, providing more leg and hip coverage for winter riding. I think they’d sell....

    Garage Door Opener

I soldered a capacitor inline to a solenoid, with a 5a fuse. I took that assembly and threw it in the trash.    I then used 3m dual lock to put my opener on the rear wall of the glovebox. Easy to reach, never moves, doesn’t block glovebox use, and I don’t have to be precise. I just reach in...

    Parts Availability Issues

My 2014 had to wait months for a part. And that was before covid inhibited anyone’s production or shipping. Given how reliable these bikes tend to be, I don’t think there’s tremendous depth in Yamaha’s replacement parts stock.    Ordered a Yamaha Touring screen recently, only to be told they...
