FODS WV 2016 - Picture Thread

I'll relate my faux pas as folks seemed to like the story. I had been following the GPS from Helvetia to the campground and it put me on a well graded dirt road called Zumbach, which became County 52, and I just found it's also named Silica Rd. No problem till passing several houses, then there...

    FODS 2016 returns to WV

Got home after a long wet day of riding the same direction the rain was going. Thanks to Jim and good to see everybody.

Sorry to hear about the drop - was looking forward to seeing you there.

    BeemerDonS crashes, is in hospital.

Holy crap, I don't look at this site for months, and what a shock. As a role model for all us younger old farts, we expect you on the bike again this fall. I'm hoping to make WV and it'd be great to see you.

    Anyone Touring on a Tenere?

I've had the Tenere for 3 years after 2 FJRs. The FJR is more beautiful and the engine is addictive. Otherwise with a couple of easy mods, I prefer the Tenere for long distance. I've done several 1,000 mile days and lived off it for a month on a DC/Alaska trip. My knees are not as bent, the...

    Another BMW Final Drive Failure

Alan - The NHTSA person had been fed electrical reports for a while and several of us previously had worked with him to get the ignition switch recall. As we live under 10 miles apart the idea was for him to see my FJR, but with my travel we we just were having trouble getting together. When...

Boondocking on a Bike? MC travel on the cheap

Wanna keep her your best friend? Fly her to Denver and meet her there. The middle part of the country is the most fatiguing boring slab in the world, takes about 2-3 days of non-stop wind gusts, and usually long days of hot mugginess or rain. Get an Iron Butt award or two to make the miles...

    Motorcycle Observations in Europe

The double stickers can relate speed for the type of road, and for the weight. You also should have an international drivers license, which is just an excuse to shell out $65 (iirc) to the AAA before you go. I regularly forget mine at home and rent without it, but think things could get sticky...

Boondocking on a Bike? MC travel on the cheap

MSR Whiperlite for $79 is really hard to beat. You can re-sell it for most of that later. I've seen too many Colemans rust, so swore off of them. That said, Craigslist ALWAYS has a bunch of camp stoves for sale, cheap.

Boondocking on a Bike? MC travel on the cheap

+1 to go for it. I have done the boondocking/free tent camping thing and it's not as easy as you'd think. It turns out that somebody owns everything - imagine that. Keep a flat plastic plate in your pocket for the side stand. I tend to camp if possible, shower at least every 3rd or 4th day...

    Missing 777

Going back to the topic of surveillance and lack of info, look again at the map of the Indian Ocean. Think in terms of what is there to spend resources on. Pretty much nothing. Even unlimited surveillance budgets get targeted to potential and perceived threats. Once you get a thousand + miles...

North American Wild Card Moto-Tag Game

Alan Nice shot. I am assuming that it was not the grabbed photos since there is no bike. If that's the bike behind the trees then you got it. Otherwise, we can't ride into DC without passing stone bridges somewhere. Here is the grab with the Memorial Bridge that goes from the Lincoln Memorial...

North American Wild Card Moto-Tag Game

Here ya go, Fred: https://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/Loudoun/053-0156_Goose_Creek_Stone_Bridge_1974_Final_Nomination.pdf We have boatloads of stone bridges in the MD/DC/VA area, including battlefields and aqueducts. I'll try to get what is left of one of the bigger aqueducts on...

    "Seafoaming" your FJR?

I do essentially the same that Jeff suggested but give it about half hour to an hour while doing other stuff around the garage. Usually trying to find something in the mess takes that long. I've experimented with Seafoam in a couple of engines that I either was about to take apart or had pieces...

2014 Super Tenere and Super Tenere ES

Groan - Here we go again with trying to define how heavy is too much. Or comparisons between the weights of various bikes. I'm with 20valves in liking the bike. I've got one of the early ones for North America. It looks to me like Yam really listened to what the riders wanted for upgrades...

    Ford 1929 Tri-motor

I got to fly right seat in one, which was incredible. You can leave the cockpit side window open and hang your elbow out. Checking the engine instruments means . . . . . . Looking at the strut over the engine! Good time!
