Time has come to fully service the shock pivot assembly. I‘ve seen a number of sketchy lifting setups around so I decided there had to be a better mouse trap.

This is a very simple, effective and safe “Peg-Leg” (referred to a PL from here on) for lifting / removing the center stand. After installed and used on a good motorcycle scissor jack, it is just as stable as the center stand. I do recommend some type of front wheel chock (i.e. Condor, front vise, etc.)

This setup leverages the upper shock mount bolt to carry the bike’s weight and the swing arm bolt to prevent kick out of the PL. The swing arm bolt will carry little to no weight as designed.

Caveats - this setup requires:

  • Removing of the rear shock – not an issue for me because it needs servicing too
  • Removing of swing arm – again not an issue for me because it needs servicing too
  • A wide base, good quality motorcycle scissor jack to safely support the PL "T" base – DO NOT TRY THIS WITH A FLOOR JACK OR YOUR CAR'S SCISSOR JACK. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!!
It took about 20 minutes to fabricate it out of some scraps laying around the shop. Here are the raw materials

  • 1.25” x .125 x 27” square tubing for the “T” (13” for the vertical, 14” for the base)
  • (2) 2” x .375" x 5” aluminum flat bars for the anti-kickouts (used alum to prevent scratching the swing arm pivot bolt)
  • 1” OD x .500” ID x 2.25” DOM tubing for the shock mount. This ID is close enough to the 12mm upper shock bolt to prevent twisting/raking
Here are the pictures:

Fab complete - Welds are burned in good

Mounted in - Ensure that nut is on the upper bolt. Screw the swing arm pivot bolt in fully to engage it on the right side.

Lift Off - Jack up the scissor lift. No weight on the center stand.

Hopefully this will help others safely service the rear shock assemblies.
